I bought a 1gb ram for my Toshiba Satellite off gmarket. Specs say it will take 1gb PC 2700 but when I snap it in, my laptop won't boot. Doesn't work alone or with the other ram. The other ram is 256 a pc 2700s. They're both sodimm running at 333mhz.
Somehting I don't know or is at bad ram? |

Some laptops require matching memory modules (same size and speed per slot). I don't know why it doesn't work alone though. Maybe it's just a bad module. Ask for a replacement. |

Forgive me if this is obvious, but when I tried to upgrade mine, the first time I just didn't push it down all the way until it clicked into place. It seems like it fits, but you have to really push it all the way down until the little handles get pushed up into locked position.
When I restarted, it worked fine for me, although it does take a long time to boot the first time after you install it, and then I would recommend rebooting it again.
Good luck! If you do get a refund, I can recommend crucial.com for both their system recommendations, and the memory itself. Works great. |

Maybe I didn't wait long enouigh for it to boot. I gave it several minutes. No go. How long did it take with yours?

I have few questions for you:
- Which Satellite model?
- Does it have only one memory stick or two? (Single 256Mb or 2x128Mb)
- If it is an old model, are you sure it'll accept 1Gb sticks? (Might need BIOS update if really old.)
Take the old one(s) out and install your new stick in memory slot A. Manual will tell you which is A and which is B. If it still doesn't work, try with the old configuration. It the old configuration works I think your new new memory stick might be broken. |

It's a Satellite A30. Here are the specs:

It has two slots. The 256 in it says PC2700s 333 mhz sodimm. I got those same specs for the 1gb stick.
I'm still wondering if I should have given it more time to boot. How do I get the latest bios? The model is discontinued.

They seem to sell these babies with different names in different locations. Anyway, looks like the BIOS for Satellite A30 hasn't been updated in years. The latest I found after <2 minutes surfing was 27/04/05 and goes by version name 1.70. LINK Some people mentioned that the latest BIOS is 1.80, though.
Anyway, I don't think that your problem is BIOS related so you shouldn't update your BIOS. (Besides, I'm not absolutely sure that BIOS behind the link is for you!!!) There might be some weird compatibility problem with that specific memory stick and your laptop or the stick is just dead.
Does your laptop work still with the original configuration?
As for booting up after memory upgrade, it should take only few seconds.

| For the record, my 2 gig upgrade (from 1gb) took about 1-2 minutes to be recognized by my 1.66x2 intel Core Duo laptop. It gave me a funky system memory change has been detected screen, press a button to continue. Then it didn't respond for a few moments, then I turned it off and it was sweet when I restarted it. It sounds like we're on different terms, though, if this system hasn't had a bios update since '05. I'm just saying be patient with memory upgrades, in my experience. |

Thanks. I returned the memory and I'm gonna try a different brand. I picked whatever was cheapest on gmarket and maybe that was a mistake.

| I think the specs could be wrong. I was under the impression the old celeron notebook mainboards could only accept 1 GB (2x 512mb). |

go to http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/
This will tell you what kind of memory will best fit your system, the max that your computer can handle, and things like whether or not you need ECC or non-ECC ram, whether or not you can mismatch, etc. Very useful, even if you don't buy from them (free tool). |
