We don't have a dress code at either of my schools. I've been told that the principals and vice-principals would like us to dress up more (and I mean me and all the Korean teachers) but no one does. I wear jeans and a T-shirt to school every day. Lots of people on here will tell you that you must dress for success and look the part of "a real teacher." I got my dress code from the other teachers at my school. I dress casual the same as them but I do know it depends on what school you end up at. And by the by, don't worry too much if you have some people on here telling you that people won't respect you as much if you don't dress up. It's a load of bull. Teachers who recognize a good teacher when they see one don't give a rat's ass how you dress 'cause it's all in what you can do in a classroom.

Dress the same as the Korean teachers of your gender at your school and you should be fine. If you're a guy it's always a good idea to have a few suits. |

I did suit and tie the first few days because you meet everyone.
The first day of classes I wear a tie and a jacket.
Dockers and dress shirt after that.
Lately I've been wearing brown hiking shoes
because I can't find dress shoes to fit.
One woman wears jeans but none of the guys do.
Bottom line. Overdress at first and then tone
it down after you get a feel for your school.
Not any different than the US really. |

I wear dress pants with a shirt and tie almost every day, but it's getting too hot to wear that. Occasionaly I'll wear jeans and a polo shirt, but not too often. I'd say about 30-40% of the female teachers wear jeans on any given day. |

Mostly dress pants and a nice shirt. (I'm a woman by the way)
This year, I've started to dress a bit more casually since it seemed pointless to dress up since I, unlike a lot of the Korean teachers at my school, actually use the black board. |

Yes, that's the current dress code in South Korea!
Be sure to wear it with a smile... |

I find it hard to believe people don't know how teachers are supposed to dress. Are you seriously telling us you need a dress code to know what is appropriate to wear? How long has your mother had to dress you anyway? |

After the first couple days you will see what the main dress style at your school is and you follow that. At my school, most of the 35 women wear jeans to work except some of the older ladies who wear dresses. The handful of guys wear tracksuits, jeans or suit and tie for the one old guy.
I wear jeans most days. Just never got into wearing a tracksuit. |

I don't know - after seeing how a lot of uni TAs and even some professors dress in North America it might be quite common for recent grads to think that jeans and a T-shirt is how teachers are supposed to dress. |
