CARACAS, Venezuela (CNN) -- Venezuela's most-watched television station -- and outlet for the political opposition -- went off the air after the government refused to renew its broadcast license.

Radio Caracas Television (RCTV), which has been broadcasting for 53 years, was replaced by a state-run station -- TVes -- on Monday. The new station's logo began running immediately after RCTV went off the air.

Leading up to the deadline, police on Sunday used water cannons and what appeared to be tear gas to break up thousands of demonstrators protesting the government's decision to close the country's most-watched television station...

So I'm wondering when will the American invasion take place? There is oil to be taken away. Wink

An election years is coming up. Some politician may ride the "Worst than Hitler" ploy to political office. It pains me greatly to see Chavez undo all the free market advances made and carrying along much of south and central america with him... but he was elected. They should be free to drag their own nation down into hell.

Thanks for posting this thread topic. It's only a matter of time before Venezuela goes the way of Zimbabwe and Cuba. Anyone who claims to be a socialist, tries to extend his term in office indefinitely and begins clamping down on the opposition is already a fascist-in-waiting.

But enablers like Harpeau will always harp on the oil reserves. Gets old, that black gold talk.

what if:

Canadas top court on Friday ordered the Defense Ministry to take control of installations of an opposition television station amid a show of military force before the stations controversial closure.

Prime Minister Stephen Harpers decision to close the CTV television channel, which he accuses of backing a 2002 coup against him, has prompted international condemnation and several demonstrations.

Canadas Supreme Court ordered the military to guard, control and monitor some of the stations installations and equipment including transmission equipment and antennas throughout the country.

A CTV source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said staff at the station believed troops would take over the stations Toronto headquarters.

The court determined that the government must take the CTVs broadcast equipment to ensure a smooth handover to a state channel that will replace CTV with broadcasts promoting the values of Harperss neo-con regime. (Reuters h/t Say Anything)

I would say the Canadian voting public got really stupid really quick and they're getting the government they clearly, richly deserve.

To me, Chavez is like a wad of gum on the bottom of my shoe: Yeah, a pain to put up with for a while, but I keep on walking and little by little it loses its stickiness and eventually is walked off. I remember the trouble it caused though, and I learn to avoid the gum the next time.

History will keep on walking.

Chavez is truly evil.

There is a coup coming.

Let us hope that the US stays out of it, so that when the coup comes and Venezuela begins to travel toward a little more freedom again, there is no American involvement involved to dirty the image of an already dirty, but necessary, event.

I know making such snide remarks is fashionable. But what is your point? Do you really believe America is going to invade Venezuela?

Moreover, Hugo Chavez moves to shut down the last major press organ that he does not control, and all you want to do is sneer at American foreign policy?

The Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa is seeking OAS intervention but doubts it will get it because Chavez wields enough influence over enough of its members to block unanimity, thus vetoing any possible sanctions...

Quote:

And, in other news, "the Man of the People" fired rubber bullets and tear gas into the people today...

Quote:
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- National Guard troops fired tear gas and rubber bullets Monday into a crowd of protesters angry over a decision by President Hugo Chavez that forced a critical television station off the air.

University students blocked one lane of a major highway hours after Radio Caracas Television ceased broadcasting at midnight and was replaced with a new state-funded channel. Chavez had refused to renew RCTV's broadcast license, accusing it of "subversive" activities and of backing a 2002 coup against him.

Two students were injured by rubber bullets and a third was hit with a tear gas canister, said Ana Teresa Yepez, an administrator at Caracas' Metropolitan University. She said about 20 protesters were treated for inhaling tear gas.

The new public channel, TVES, launched its transmissions with artists singing pro-Chavez music, then carried an exercise program and a talk show, interspersed with government ads proclaiming, "Now Venezuela belongs to everyone."

Crowds of students demonstrated across Caracas, saying they fear for the future of free speech...

Maybe. Arguably Chavez was elected by a large majority and enjoys popularity at home. Handing out large wads of petro dollars to poor people has that effect. Yes, his actions really suck, but the people seem to like it. The best thing Americans can do is simply not support him by not buying his oil. As if.

Its like Zimbabwe. Handing out stolen land is popular even though they are starving. I say let Zimbabwe starve if they support Land Reform and let Chavez take Venezuela down the road to distatorship. The US should leave him alone and that includes not buying his oil as you propose.
