PALO ALTO, California (AP) -- Stanford University officials said they were investigating claims that a young woman passed herself off as a student, talked her way into several dormitories and lived on campus for eight months.

The university would not disclose the woman's name or the circumstances surrounding her alleged ruse, but the school's student newspaper identified her as Azia Kim, 18, of Fullerton.

"We consider these allegations, if confirmed, to be a serious breach of security within the residence halls," Greg Boardman, Stanford's vice provost for student affairs, said in a statement Thursday. "We are conducting a full investigation into what occurred and how security can be improved."

The Stanford Daily, quoting one of Kim's former roommates, said the deception started last September, the day before Stanford's orientation for new students. Two sophomores agreed to let Kim stay in their room after she told them she did not like the roommate she had been assigned.

During the fall and winter terms, Kim allegedly slept in the other women's room or the lounge of the 210-resident dorm. Last month, she moved into another dorm after being referred to another student who needed a roommate.

Resident assistants became suspicious after comparing conflicting statements Kim allegedly gave and contacting the student housing office. Kim was confronted and escorted from campus on Monday, according to The Stanford Daily.

Amy Zhou, Kim's roommate in the second dorm, said Kim apparently got into the room through the window because she never had a key. Kim told other students she was a sophomore majoring in human biology and bought textbooks and studied with friends.

"Personally, I don't feel safe now that Stanford allowed this to happen and that they're not doing anything to ensure the safety of their students," Zhou told the newspaper.

Part of the investigation by campus police and administrators is focused on finding out if Kim took classes, ate meals in the dorm cafeteria or availed herself of other services, said Elaine Ray, a Stanford spokeswoman.

The university plans to forward evidence in the case to Santa Clara County prosecutors to determine if criminal charges are warranted.

"Stanford is a remarkably caring and friendly community," Boardman said. "It is unfortunate that some may be able to take advantage of that trust for their own ends."

Kim's whereabouts or contacts for her family could not be immediately found by The Associated Press.

In college I lived in the dorms or in local housing. There were times when I housed in dorms between semesters when normal students went home. There is a lot of lingering at colleges. Schools are run by liberals and thus full of homeless people. Homeless regulars too. Student is a state of mind. Dorm res regular window entry looks bad. hmmm. Was she hot? I'd see what the problem is.

I don't know what it was like in Oscar Mayer University, Tony, but in my university people were never allowed into dorms unless they were paying the housing fee and their overnight guests. If not, security quickly escorted them off campus.

Maybe they are all hanging out with Cho's family.

What the hell was she doing there for eight months anyway? Was she actually sitting in classrooms? Seems like a professor somewhere might have caught on to this, especially when it came to exam times. I swear these Korean Americans freak me out with their crazyness.

Yeah, college can be a strange place. Those of us who bothered to go to college to get our degrees know this. But, yes, colleges want their money.

These people were too lax about this. I could see someone getting away with it for a few weeks- the confusion of the start of the school year in Aug/Sept- but not for eight months. Someone wasn't doing their job.

She's not too different from certain foreigners who either dropped out of community college or kindergarten to teach English in Korea.

The North American university system is rather open by design. I'd hate to see everyone having to show their ID to gain access to buildings and the library. Cho was, of course, a duly registered student. I'd hate to see fear mongering close the system.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. Every time I tried to catch a few winks in one of the girls' dorms at Stanford I always got booted out.

A dorm is a little different, of course.

Nowhere does it say she was getting a free education. Yes, she did buy books and study with others, but she did not attend classes. It appears she was just squatting.

Great shot of John Candy. I sure do miss his unique brand of humor. What a loss, eh?

An update on that liar who attended Stanford. She also went to ROTC at Santa Clara University! WTF??

Report: Impostor also fooled ROTC Wed May 30, 5:49 PM ET

PALO ALTO, Calif. - A young woman accused of posing as a Stanford University student for eight months also fooled Santa Clara University's Army ROTC, which provided her with equipment and included her in classes, a newspaper reported.

Stanford officials say Azia Kim, 18, of Fullerton, attended classes and lived on campus, talking her way into several dormitories until the ruse was discovered last week.

Kim used that guise to misrepresent herself to an ROTC adviser, military officials said. Since Stanford doesn't offer an ROTC program, she enrolled in cadet classes at nearby Santa Clara, the Stanford Daily first reported Tuesday.

Kim sat in on classes on military history and military equipment, said Robert Rosenburgh, spokesman for ROTC's Western Region Cadet Command.

Stanford ROTC adviser Diana Clough said Kim, following ROTC requirements, regularly sent her information about her grades, falsely reporting that she received A's in English and humanities classes, an A- in economics and a B in chemistry.

"She was a good student, I've been told," Rosenburgh said. "No suspicions were raised."

Kim was issued three uniforms, a backpack, shoes and a canteen, among other supplies, Rosenburgh said. After her cover was blown last week, the equipment was found abandoned at Stanford's Kimball dormitory.

The Army does not intend to further investigate the issue, assuming it was just a prank, Rosenburgh said. A variety of checks would have prevented Kim from becoming an Army officer, he said.

Stanford University and the Stanford police department are continuing their investigation, trying to understand how Kim managed to fool students and officials for nearly a year. The information will be sent to the Santa Clara County district attorney's office, which will decide whether to prosecute.

A person who answered a call to Kim's home said the family did not want to comment.
