They asked us attend some seminars next week to train us for a new book. They want us to go from 10-until work start-4, without compensation of course, for 6 days. After which we have to make presentations to the managers about the new books. I laughed at them and said "no thank you! Check my contract."
They affirmed that according to my contract that I have to attend these seminars ( which isn't true). Anyway, I told them I could easily go work at another hogwan if they want to be unreasonable.
I don't want to let them even get an inch of extra pointless work in, because from my past experiences they keep giving you more and more.
Anyone have any tips for me as what to do? SHould I just not go and see what happens? |

You can either:
1. Don't go and see what happens.
2. Don't go and claim you got lost.
3. Ask for your letter of release.
4. Do a runner.
I suggest #1 or #2 |

Don't go.
What will they do, fire you? You can replace them much easier than they can replace you.
IF you are long into your contract and they try to fire you the labor board will get your ticket and severance for you anyway.
That will make it easier to find a new job.
They can't legally fine or penalize you.
Ignore that crap and tell your slave driver / whitey wrangler to "stuff it where the sun don't shine." |

Your employer is asking for something for nothing. In any business relationship that is unreasonable. If the training is really that valuable to their business they would be willing to pay you to attend. Right now it seems to have a value of zero to both you and your employer. |

Yes, I believe the seminars will be in Korean anyway. They expect all the foreigner teachers to attend, 5 from our school, and all other branches. Its ridiculous. I laughed when they said there will be a free lunch. HAHA! I crossed my arms and said no. |

How complicated do they anticipate this new book being, if it requires 6 DAYS of training? If it's that complex the students have got no hope in he11 of following it.
If it conducted in Korean you REALLY don't have to go, if it is conducted in English tell them to feck off that's your sleeping time!! |

Tell them if they want you to go outside of your regular work location, then they should pay you your OT Rate for the seminar. |

I stand behind my earlier post. However, just for you own knowledge it may be worth while to attend the first meeting and see if you personally feel it is of benefit to you. That is if you have the free time. I would not go under duress but it might be worth seeing what it is about. You can judge from there if it is worthwhile to go to any more sessions (doubtful, but the first one might make your life easier to have the information). |

My contract ends here in a few months anyway. So, I would be teaching the book for exactly one month. They also want the other teachers to attend, but they will be done their contracts before the new book is even put into effect. It is so sensless. I can't understand what is going on other than they want foreigners to attend to make it look more legit. Either way, I told them to pay me of they want to me to do any extra work. I've made that mistake before at my first job, and not doing it again. |
