Quote:
MELBOURNE (Reuters) - An Australian hotel catering for homosexuals has won the right to ban heterosexuals from its bars so as to provide a safe and comfortable venue for gay men.

In what is believed to be a first for Australia, the Victorian state civil and administrative tribunal ruled last week that the Peel Hotel in the southern city of Melbourne could exclude patrons based on their sexuality.

Australia's equal opportunity laws prevent people being discriminated against based on race, religion or sexuality.

But Peel Hotel owner Tom McFeely said the ruling was necessary to provide gay men with a non-threatening atmosphere to freely express their sexuality.

"If I can limit the number of heterosexuals entering the Peel, then that helps me keep the safe balance," Peel told Australian radio on Monday.

McFeely said that, while the hotel welcomed everyone, its gay clientele had expressed discomfort over the number of heterosexuals and lesbians coming to the venue in the past year.

He said there were more than 2,000 venues in Melbourne that catered to heterosexuals, but his hotel was the only one marketing itself predominantly to gay men.

Victoria's state human rights commission backed the ruling, saying it was in line with equal opportunity guidelines defending the rights of groups subject to discrimination.

Commission chief Helen Szoke said the hotel's gay clientele had experienced harassment and violence. "(They) also have felt as though they've been like a zoo exhibit with big groups of women on hens' parties coming to the club," Szoke told reporters.

McFeely told the radio that the hotel had received homophobic telephone calls since news of the ruling was made public.

A private business should be able to show anyone the door for any reason. If one finds their policy offensive, don't patronize the place.

I fully, 100%, totally agree. Private property is private.

Well when gangs of gay men start beating up poorly dressed straight guys then you can claim heterophobia. That said, I disagree with this decision, we shouldn't be building new closets, we should be breaking them down.

I take it you would support a "straight-only" bar?

Much ado about nothing. Why do straight guys want to go to gay bars anyways?

I have to believe that this bar has experienced some problems- it would be good to know the whole story.

My straight friends and I have often gone to "gay" bars on South Beach- with our gays friends or not. It used to be the only place with decent music (some straight bars are catching up on that front). Also, straight women can relax at gay bars- something not really possible at straight ones. Spending the evening with gays friends partying and dancing, and feeling safe, is a good alternative to the (straight) meat market. Yes, gay bars are serious meat markets, but we straight women are not on the menu.

But even on South Beach (maybe the gayest beach in the world) there is gay bashing and hatred towards gays. It is such a sad thing- that some people are so insecure that they have to beat up and put down others.

By the way, there are probably millions of "straight bars", where a gay would enter only to escape a hurricane. A lot of them go by the name "Sports Bars", or offer free drinks to single women. They have ways of identifying themselves. Gays sure don't go there to beat up straight men. To bad the same can't be said for (some, few) straight men going into gay bars itching for blood sport.

Again, not reading the posts! You can't join the argument unless you read the posts.

If a straight bar prohibited gays because they felt uncomfortable with them there then the PC brigade would be crying homophobia.

i am so sick of people whinning for equal rights and then complaining when the grass isnt greener on the other side.
being a white heterosexual male hasnt made my life any easier, no ones shown me the secret handshake and made my life any easier. and if i say anything that might upset any minority group that makes me a racist homophobic sexist Shocked .

OMG gay men dont like straight (or lesbian) women looking at them. BTW heterosexual men beat up other heterosexual men for dumb reasons too! WTF get on with life, the rest of us do!

For sure. As you seem to be complaining about this bar. If you're earnestly interested in entering a gay bar as a straight man, then do complain away. More power to you.

At least his moniker matches his mental state. If only we could get others on this board to follow suit we could easily identify the troubled members in our community.

And again, one last time for the retarded kids, I as a gay man, am opposed to this.
