is it possible to get involved in volunteer work on an e2 visa?
i have a feeling it may not be allowed, but wondered if anyone could confirm this.
my boyf is interested in doing a couple of hours community work, but we're not sure if it may cause problems with immigration?
any advice would be appreciated |

Technically it is, but it is not strictly enforced unless you live in Busan and have very bad luck. But better to be safe than sorry. Just explain to your boss about what types of volunteer work you will be doing. Unless he is a heartless jerkov, he should say 'yes.' Immigration will put a stamp on your ARC and you are all set. I haven't done this myself, but I have heard of others doing this and it is relatively painless and wihout incident.

Exactly how do you register, and what kinds of volunteer work can you do?
Is it an "activity not covered by the status of sojourn"? |

We all should volunteer to work for free! They are nice enough to give us housing and if they throw in food hey what do you need money for? Just my two cents! (Just kidding) |

I am going to retract part of my statement. Strike the part about asking for your boss's permission. Based on that KDOI link Bibbitybop provided for volunteer work, I don't think you need to ask your boss for strict volunteer work. Just go to immigration, take 60,000 won and fill out the proper forms. |

Well, at meeting organized by immigration not too long ago for foreigners to come and ask questions, they said that it is illegal to do volunteer work on an E-2 visa.
As usual in Korea, the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. |

Who has done this? First-hand experience? |

My friend has and said the organizers of her organization helped her out. She said the process was pretty simple on Korean standards. |
