Who doesn't judge other countries by what they see on TV or movies?

If you haven't travelled or lived there, or talked to people who have, then all you've got to go on is what you watch or read about a place. It's only natural.

Exactly! thank you.

Well, lets pretend I'm Korean. I know my life is nothing like what I saw in Oldboy. Why would I expect the average American's life to be like Goodfellas?

Could a whole nation of people really make a judgement and thus form expectations abou us just from what they see on tv shows and in movies...?

Yes, they do. This has been happening for many years. One of the bigger problems with the US exporting so many law/crime TV dramas is that people in other countries get the idea that the US is a very dangerous place. Not so. Wink

Many of the posters on this board know little about the USA and post, anyway. Rolling Eyes

Isaac? He's not the problem. In fact, he's funny. Laughing

Then we should judge Koreans by their TV shows.

Pretty much all men either a) overdrink b) cheat, c) beat up their wives, or d) 2 or 3 of the above.

After My Sassy Girl, word went out among the men of Asia not to date Korean women.

Anyway, this isn't a kink of the Korean mind. All cultures do it. What are many American perceptions of Asians? How are these perceptions formed? From experience with Asians? Or from TV and movies?

The big difference is that the experience of meeting someone from the U.S. (or whatever country) changes very little. People who have met me and gotten to know me still say "Oh, you are so nice...Not like those people (New Yorkers, Americans, Blacks, women, etc.) on TV." I'm considered an exception and not an indicator of how off base TV can be...

I mean...it's TELEVISION. The thing that brought us the talking sponge (Spongebob) and "reality" television. I thought people could be slightly more objective about the source of their "information"

And I too hate Sex and the City and Friends. I'm not rich and I know it's pretty much impossible to have a great apartment if you have a job such as a waitress Rolling Eyes

Koreans are often rude to me and cut in line in front of me. I have even had them spit in my direction as i walk by. I have also been called a "bad man" by unprovoked children in class. When i spoke to my Korean co-teacher i was told that i look like Kevin Bacon who is generally despised in cinema.

This really made me laugh. Sorry, donkey.

Gee, because I'm sure you guys have *never* seen a movie about a foreign culture and subconsciously made generalizations about the people of that culture based on what you've seen...I'm sure that absolutely never happens, because you guys really seem to be the most open-minded, cultured, intelligent people on the earth...

Up until I was old enough to know better, I assumed England closely resembled Clockwork Orange (I thought it was so cool).

I remember people being really mad a Seinfeld a while back because of how it portrayed "stereotypical" Jews. North Americans know the world through stereotypes presented to us via popular media. It helps break down and process things that would normally seem strange and frightening to our small little brains. Some stereotypes can be a little too negative, but sometimes there is much relevance in them.

And on a lighter note...

... maybe that's why Koreans can't clone that wolf. They keep trying to power it with the "Flux capacitor" Laughing
