It's that time again (the third Saturday of the month) and I'd like to invite you out for some tasty Kashmiri food in the company of your fellow veg-heads.

VENUE CHANGE: Wazwan

This restaurant has a wide variety of vegetarian dishes and great prices. It's not too hard to get to. Exit Itaewon Station in front of the Burger King and proceed out past Starbucks, UN Club, etc., to the next set of lights.

Turn right and walk up the hill, past Starbutts and What The Book. There's a side-street leading left, with a bar called Lady Luck (or something) on the corner. This street leads toward the mosque. Head down it, past the mosque and look for Wazwan on your left.

I'll call the owner and let him know we're coming.

Have fun!

I wanted to check the place out last weekend, but I only remembered "Itaewon exit" and never found it - so I went to Ashoka instead. (Even though that place is owned by a Hindu, it was packed with Muslims from a Hyundae convention of tech workers...)

Do you know if the vegetarian items are clearly labeled and separated from the meat ones on their buffet (and if they use the same oil to cook their "vegetarian" stuff that they cook meat with?...)

There is a difference, I think, between being friendly to vegetarians and being "vegetarian friendly"...

The price is 10,000 won cheaper than the Ashoka's, though, which gotta be a good thing...

If Ever green is an Indian/Pakistani restaurant near the 'red door', then I might suggest some place else, especially if you plan to go for the buffet. The food is lackluster, expensive, and the veggie dishes don't really qualify as a meal.

If I'm mistaken about which restaurant is the Ever green, then I apologize.

Hmm... the last time that "Dan the Chainsawman" showed up at a veggie club meeting I quit my position as president shortly thereafter ...

Coincidence? ... Let's see if the "Kermo" regime can survive this grave challenge to its ability to maintain law and order ... Cool

Dan's harmless! I'm bringing a leash, just in case though.

I've fallen so far on the intrawebs. I've gone from loathed to harmless in rapid order.

It is and you are right. Me and my friends used to go there a lot but over time, I think due to a change of ownership, the prices have increased and the quality of the food has reduced dramatically.

I've noticed the same as Ilovebdt. Used to be some high quality vittles a homefry could dig his fingers into and come away with a greasy paw and a satisfied smirk. Last time I went the food wasn't warm, it tasted like bat guano, and I felt that my money would have been better spent on a bag of crack.

Uh oh.
Can I suggest a change in venue then?

I've always had excellent food at Wazwan. It's harder to get to, but the food is amazing. Here's the website so you can check out the prices (all veggie dishes under 10,000 won) and the menu:

Dang, I've taken too long to make my post - and now it's been rendered obsolete (I'll post it anyway with a couple sloppy alterations...)

But shouldn't we be thinking about what izwa rather than what Wazwa?... Mr. Green

...Anyway, at one time, the Chakra in Noksaypyeong was the best Indian restaurant overall for vegetarians, but they changed managment and have since become one of the worst...

The Chakra in Itaewon (relatively much newer) didn't seem that bad to me, but someone posted that they had inside information about too many roaches in the kitchen ...

Their branch in Hannam is probably their best, but I haven't been there in a long time...

The Ashoka is my current favorite, but they are relatively expensive at 25,000 won ...

I tried that new place near the Foreign Food Market (and I think affiliated with it) but the food was so-so at best, and even the tables didn't appear clean...

Well, I'm personally ready to bail then (and go directly to Seoul Racecourse...) unless there's a "plan B" (but if Dan shows up at Evergreen, and "Kermo" puts him on a leash, someone should be there to take pictures...)

Here are some other alternatives I can think of (after just gorging myself on spinach fettucini with rennetless cheese and Classico Tomato and Basil sauce...)

- SoSim corner of Insadong street near Anguk station ... (about 10,000 won)

- Vegelove buffet - Hanti station, Lotte department store foodcourt - top floor (9,500 won - branch of SM Ching hai)

- Dos Tacos - either their main branch in Gangnam or their new location in Hongdae (but it would probably have to be during off-hours since they're not very big and are often busy...)

- Pharoahs - small cafe in Itaewon (off side street from Hooker Hill) friendly owner, fairly decent Egyptian food but small portions (figure around 15,000 won...)

- Ali Babas - also Itaewon - somewhat better - but more expensive - Egyptian food (also small portions - figure at least 20,000 won...)

- La Tavola - another Itaewon establishment - Margharita wood-oven pizzas (not cheap, but good - and a nice view of Itaewon...)

- Sanchon - in Insadong - classy traditional Korean vegetarian - a little pricey for lunch at 19,000 won and dinner/show for 35,000 won...

-SM Ching hai (again) - Well their outdoor tables make it more like a picnic, and their buffet is very good (13,000 won)

"Gamblers Special" - get take-out pita wraps from Pita-Time in Itaewon (or take out from Dos Tacos in Gangnam) and eat on the grounds of Seoul Racecourse Park (light blue line - 436)

All the Seventh Day Adventist vegetarian restaurants (Country Life, New Start, etc.) are closed on Saturdays ...

Hey, wasn't our last picnic on a Saturday? ... I thought the next restaurant gathering was to be on a Sunday ... Question

I'd like to stay in Itaewon, since people might have already made plans around that location. I'd also like to do something cheap, and Indian food is very very good.

Pharaoh's is nice, but they really don't offer much other than hummous, baba ganoush and falafel, and there definitely wouldn't be room for a large group.

So, I'm proposing Wazwan, which is up by the mosque. Any objections?
