Does anyone know of a good way to effectively stamp out smkoing in the workplace?
The students at my school (a university) are out of control! They are smoking in the hallways, making ashtrays out of cleaning pans and are basically destroying the school! There are cigarette stains everywhere! On the floors and on the walls....
They are taking over the break areas where the benches are and turing everything into an ugly mess!
The whole place stinks and even I stink when I leave work. My lungs and throat hurt. It's like working in a bar! The hallways get so smokey that it is hard to breathe! Talk about workplace hazards !!!!!!!
The students ignore the signs on the walls that say no smoking (in Korean). When approached, they laugh and walk away while still puffing as they retreat into the boys room. They just don't care!
A couple of times, I have confiscated cigarettes and thrown them away in front of the students to set an example. This has resulted in loss of face and a student pelting me with a lighter. Nothing is working!!!
The only thing that really ends up happening is that I look like the bad guy.
This sucks cause I want to the the teacher that they like and respect but I am becoming the **beep** wayggok who yells about smkoing.
Oh what to do! |

Really - their uni students and their Koreans. What's the point? If they're doing their work, who cares? |

You must be an anal-retentive head case to post this in three different forums. No wonder the students think you're a ninny. |

As a fairly heavy smoker it sounds great, actually. Which uni is it? If I ever make a move from high school perhaps I could even make my classroom a smoking class. It would be just like the 60s with me in my tweed blazer puffing away. |

i'd hold them down and extinguish the cigarettes on the backs of their hands (the back of your hand is more sensitive to heat than the front) |

That may help them prepare for military service. (My friend had that happen to him in his military training and still has a mark on his hand). |

I like the water gun approach...fill it with warm water. Call it pee. See someone smoking around you, shoot em with wizz.
If people are being pricks about it, buy a couple of mosquito fly swatter rackets and hit them when they're smoking (it'd be a good idea to break the light in it so they don't know it's on).
That said, are there reasonable smoking areas outside? Is there smoking room or enough doors so even the more stupid students could drag their knuckles outside?
If it really was as bad as you'd say, I'd probably be pissed off too. No smoking means no smoking. Don't fall into the korean attitude other people have here: "Well this toilet doesn't smell nearly bad enough, maybe i'll smoke half a pack and put my butt out in a huge hork i leave on the ground"
I don't care if you smoke but please do it outside...seems reasonable. |

Another possible solution is to stop teaching in Korea. |
