| It's all right but it just seems so over-rated. I've lived in a few areas around Vancouver and several parts of Montreal, and the latter wins hands down. Plus, 3/4 of the GVRD is made up of American-style suburbs of the same type, and with the same stuff, you could find around almost any major North American city. |

What did you like about Montreal? I lived there, albeit in the '70s, and in the English suburb of Dollard. Whenever I go back to visit my dad, I'm always impressed by the art, architecture, restaurants, shopping, sense of style, and the smoked meat. For a long while, it was the red tide of jobs. Just a dead zone. The upside rents were cheap. Hardwood, fireplace, walk to a subway station and the city center, all for $500 a month. But the software industry has expanded a lot and really changed things. I don't think rents are that great anymore. |

Vacouver is blessed with a magnficent location in a good climate - I like cool and I have no objections to rain.
That said Vancouver is overcrowded, dirty, East Hastings is a hellhole, Its politics are ludicrous (too daarn leftist), and it is beyond the pale as stupidly expensive. |

| Being from Seattle, I've visited Vancouver on several occasions. Truly cosmopolitan city. A beautiful place to live, but sorry the rainy weather ruins it. And of course I know Seattle is just as rainy if not more. It seems weather wasn't accounted for in this survey, but I think it has a lot to do with the quality of life in an area. Give me San Diego's sun any time over Van. |

San Diego is significantly better. But anything in the U.S. is considered under terrorist threat.. so therefore American cities aren't able to have a decent quality of life anymore - according to this 2005 poll. (I remember this old 2005 story at the time).
I think you also won't find cities like Barcelona (Spain is too vulnerable to terrorists as well).
Apparently Canada isn't effected.. nor is anything German-proximity-wise.. hence the many Zurich, Vienna, and nearly everything else in the poll thats around Germany. I also remember Australia having quite a few cities mentioned in this 2005 poll.
If I were given some newspapers biased list of great cities in the world.. and nearly all of them were German or UK-commonwealth (which excludes the US).. I'd probably be resigned to giving Vancouver one of the better of the lot of them as well.
Anyone have a 2006 or 2007 version of this same poll? |

Don't buy it. Far from the best. Too much of a perpetual rat race (then you die)
The country is much more relaxing & happy. |

San Diego is nice. Great weather, less crime than LA, best zoo in the world. Beaches. The Marines. Real Mexican food.
I seriously doubt it's a prime terrorist target, either.

Poor job market in Vancouver, especially for those not already established well into a career. Not much of a market for teaching either. It's not that the economy is under performing, it's just under paying with opportunities too small for young adults with professional career ambitions. Much of Canada and the US is like that for younger adults, but very nice cities and countries they are if you have money and real estate.
While Korea is not pleasant like such a place as Vancouver, it makes good sense for a college grad to come over for a year or two to get a financial start and some real world experience. If your going back to Vancouver, it may help you get a job being a couple years older with about 20,000 Dollars to help give you some confidence and security until you find your niche. |

Is the job market still that bad? Although it's a sound plan if you want to live and work in vancouver to bank some cash in Korea. Yeah, 20K at age 25 can give you a good start. |
