1.Bandwagon effect - the tendency to do (or believe) things because many other people do (or believe) the same. Related to groupthink, herd behaviour, and manias. Carl Jung pioneered the idea of the collective unconscious which is considered by Jungian

Emotional effects leading to generalizations. Best example: Seeing a Japanese person kill your mother causes you to distrust all Japanese people.

What you know is just what you THINK you know, and most of THAT was simply absorbed from;
-mom and pop
-elementary, middle, highschool, university
-tv
-hollywood movies
-national history and pride

Ah, yes, and this exchange brings up yet another reason:

People believe the wrong things simply because they are argumentative. Some people -- especially lawyers -- dont really know anything. They just win arguments. They dont believe anything or not believe anything. They just try to win.

The part about not even being able to assess your own biases really does make it hard to consider that anyone really knows anything. Interesting, but what do you with that? Just carry on?
