I was wondering if anyone had any tips for learning Korean, I know the han-gul alphabet and can read words, (albeit very, very slowly) and I know a few phrases, but nothing special. The only Koreans that I really know are the teachers and to be honest I dont really fancy spending my free time with them as they are older and some of their English is not the greatest. i would be grateful for any advice, I know a few websites and the most helpful for me was http://www.interedu.go.kr/indexe.html |

I know a similar amount of Korean to you - and work in what is an almost totally Korean setting. The only teachers with significant amounts of English are the Korean English teachers and all of them are not fluent in English .... But I would like to be able to talk to the Korean teachers ... and it can be suprising just how much they do appreciate even a few words in Korean - even just thank you - I did that to one of the teachers yesterday - and his immediate response was suprise and happy that I had used one Korean word ... I think what have worked out in the time I have been here that the best way for me to improve my Korean ... and learn enough to be able to use it ... and live effectively here... is to take the class route and start classes ... I have some great books ... and know of a number of good websites ... but by themselves they haven't worked for me ... So hopefully in a week and a half I will start going to a Korean class for a few hours on Saturday ... and begin to make more progress ... There are no classes held in the town I am in ... so I need to go to Seoul for it ... which is why Saturday is really the only realistic time for me ... but I think in the long run it will be worthwhile - especially if I do end up staying for longer than the year (which is what I am leaning towards) .... and I also know that the Korean teachers at school will be happy for me to practice on them during the week ... And I will personally be happy to be able to communicate with them more than I can with the level of English they currently have ...
It is worth considering the class options ... even if only to give you a good push along to get started ....

There are the "Let's Speak Korean" videos on youtube. I think they were made by Arirang (?). Has anyone tried them yet? I watched 20 minutes, got distracted, and forgot about it. Whoops. Good thing I've got 2 more months to practice!
Here's a link if anyone is interested:

I've been attending Yonsei university KLI (Viewed by some to be the best language school for learning Korean) and the teacher only speaks Korean to us. She refuses to explain anything in English. It's very frustrating, but we've learned a lot in the class. |

If you want to learn grammar hit the books. You can buy books with English explanations of grammar.
If you want to speak Korean, learn the basics and then hit the bar or find a Korean girlfriend or boyfriend. If you live in Busan, Seoul, Gwangju or Daejon you should be able to find a sleepy bar where the bartenders are bored and would enjoy chatting with you. Especially if you are decent looking. |
