Welcome memahi,
Korea's not as bad as many paint it to be. It all depends on your attitude.
Narrow down your questions and ppl will help you. |

Are you coming on an Indian passport? If not, it might be very easy to pass yourself off as an American or Brit.
In what city will you be working? |

For Indian/Pak/Bangladeshi groceries, go to Itaewon, walk towards Burger King and keep walking up the main road, turn right when you reach the sign for the mosque, head up the hill, you will find grocery stores on your left on the way up the hill. A hijra may try to capture you there so be careful! Subcontinent style restaurants are criminally expensive. Korean food is generally very healthy. Among some people there are naive attitudes towards India. Some people think it is a backward country and some people just have an aversion to it. I think there is some racism towards Indians in Korea- Koreans rank migrants, with Americans at the top of the list of favourites and dark-skinned people at the bottom. Hence the number of Phillipinos working in shitty jobs that Koreans wouldn't touch, who are treated like shit. And the claims the Phillipines is not an English speaking country, despite the fact the Phillipines English pisses all over Korea's. And the endless claims that Korea is an ethnically homogenous society, which completely ignores the migrant working population, some of whom have settled here. Nationality and ethnicity are completely intertwined (same with India, but you will find Korea much more culturally single-minded). I am not Indian but my good friend is. He came here to visit me and hated Korea. He was treated like a doofus by everyone, despite having a PhD in Engineering and speaking English at level 9 in TOEIC. You really have to make an effort to understand Korean history, culture and language, if not to understand Korean prejudices, just to keep high-minded enough to deal with daily BS. |
