Has anyone been to Kazakhstan? What was it like? What are some places that you would recommend? |

I was there in 2001 and things were rapidly changing at that point, so I'd imagine it's quite a bit different now...
Almaty was a really nice city. Nothing terribly interesting, but generally pleasant. Astana, the newer capital, was really smoky and grey. The train trip between the two was awesome, and I got to see camels out of the train window... but in general I wouldn't say Kazakhstan has that much to offer for tourists. There was a tourist resort we visited up north... Bor-something... with really nice mountains and lakes and good hiking. That's the only really interesting thing I remember. Again, though, I was there six years ago and things have probably changed quite a bit. |
