Let's say you got in a time machine and were transported to the stone age with no way back and you wanted to make a metal sword. How would you do it?

It's made of soy

But it's not like a Back to the Future time machine where it goes with you. It's more like the Star Trek transporter where you just get zapped there with nothing else.

In which part of the world? It would have to be somewhere with iron ore deposits or you'd be fuc*ked.

Check some Korean history books. I am sure they must have done it first. Wink

Okay I guess the first step is to make a mould. So maybe I carve out a mould from wood using a stone tool.

Then I've got to create a forge. For that I need to build stone and coal and a stone container as well to keep the melted metal in. Are there any restrictions on where I can get the metal from?

(If I succeed, given that I'm gonna be the best armed bloke around, do I get to be King of the Cavemen?).

if you were lucky enough to be somewhere with iron deposits, you would need to build a bloomery. Although, if I remember anthropology class correctly, the first workable iron probably came from meteors, so it was already smelted. If you could go back in time to immediately after a meteor shower, you'd be in good shape.

If you were here in Asia you'd already know something about making high temps using pottery kilns. Next you'd need iron ore. There's something called 'bog iron'. Presumably I'd find the iron and then get it hot and mess around with it, get pissed off, and wait for the next generation to figure it out while I use my spear to fetch dinner.

You just say that because you haven't thought about it first.
