I really want to buy a new bike. Maybe a Specialized, but the prices in Korea are nuts, as a lot of you know. Scott seem good value...
Will they have any bargains on '06 bikes, or will they have all gone by now do ya reckon?
Anyway, where does one go to obtain such an item?

Had my Specialized stolen a month or so ago, so I ended up buying a new Kona Kula Deluxe.
I checked out OD Bike near Gangdong Station (http://odbike.co.kr/index.htm) and Chung Cycle, near Shinsa Station (www.chungcycle.co.kr).
OD Bike shop had lots of Kona, a few Specialized, Trek....ChungCycle had random stuff in their shop, but they just went right to the catalog. After talking to both shops, I ended up buying it at ChungCycle as they were a good 150,000won cheaper.
There is a dude at OD Bike that speak English fairly well.....the guy at ChungCycle speaks enough to talk about bikes. So far so good with the guys at ChungCycle....It seemed like they could order in whatever you wanted, if its in the catalogs they have, I'm sure they can get it. They didnt try and dick me around with the price.....the first price they told me was 150,000won cheaper than the BEST price I could get out of the guys at OD Bike.
There are some other bikes shops listed on this site (http://www.mtbk-adventure.com/bike_shops.php). Not sure if all of them are still around or not.

Here's the shop I use for parts. They have both road and mountain bikes. The prices are the cheapest I've been able to find in Seoul.

Looks good, but still check around.....List price there on the Kula Deluxe is still more expensive than I paid at ChungCycle. Basically same price, but I changed the stem and riserbar. |

People bang on about how crazy the prices are, but two things spring to my mind.
First, er, they aint that crazy compared to the US.
That Kona is around 1600 bucks in America and around 1850 here. Big deal!
Cos my second point is, I'm a Brit, and we pay even more over there!!
I'm off down Sinsa way to buy me a beast!

You should have been around a couple of months ago when I sold my new Scott Scale 40. The dude that bought it got a primo deal.  |

Nah, I totally agree with ya!! If you shop around you can get a comparatively good price...I only paid around $200 more than I would have in Canada. High end bikes tend to be more expensive I think as there isnt the demand as at home and some parts can be a little steep, but over all the prices are pretty good.
Let us know how it went and what you end up getting..... |

I can't remember if I saw any at OD Bike or not....I would imagine there were. There definintely were road bikes floating around at ChungCycle. If not, have a gander in the catalogs they have....
Or give them a shout and ask them....ChungCycle: 02-547-2383, OD Bike: 02-474-5567. There are people at both shops that can speak English. |

Go to Chung Cycle in person and negotiate a deal as opposed to ordering online through them. They will negotiate, and order the bike that you want. It only takes a day or two for them to get it. |

Exactly. This is the same problem I had. I need a 19 inch/58cm but most Koreans have short legs and the bike shops are there to accomodate (only) them. I was about to put up a post suggesting you look into getting a Korean brand bike. Some of them are pretty decent; there's a ti one and a carbon one -- each available in Deore XTR. However, the largest size the Korean bike companies all make is 18 inch! Is that insular-ism, or what? Korea for the Koreans to the death...
It wouldnt be so bad, except then when you want to get an imported bike without paying the tariff-- because no Korean made sub was available -- the customs ppl become buttheads about it, telling you size doesnt matter. I think they're just jealous thiers are smaller.
All things being equal, though, if you can a Giant or Scott Scale (get the Scale 20 or 30 -- carbon saves so much weight!) from Taiwan Ebay, have it shipped here, and then pay the tariff, its STILL cheaper than buying it from a shop here. I actually got a slightly used Cannondale on Ebay for about 1100$US including shipping and tariff... later I EASILY sold it on www.wildbike.co.kr for the same price... sold in less than a day, actually. |

Well, I farted about in ChungCycle for about an hour and a half before slapping down my credit card to pay for a Kona Kula Deluxe with a Chris King headset. Old guy came down to 1.64 for the lot!
Credit card got refused. I left cursing my mum who has clearly forgotten to send a cheque to Visa! Jesus, is it too much to ask?
I'm only 30 years old mum. I can't do everything... |
