The Phantom Rockers are still around? Cool! I think they might have been the first band I saw live, at an all ages show with the Meteors (are they still around?) in 1993 in Atlanta. |

the wikipedia page for it is an ok place to start. Check the links too.

Psychobilly is a genre of music generally described as a mix between the punk rock of the 1970s and the American rockabilly of the 1950s.
The genre is characterized by lyrical references to horror films, violence, exploitation films, lurid sexuality and other topics generally considered taboo sometimes presented in a comedic, tongue-in-cheek fashion. Psychobilly music is often played with an upright bass instead of an electric bass. |

I'm pretty sure The Meteors are considered the first psychobilly band, might as well start with them.

I agree with everything cwemory posted... I have only recently gotten into psychobilly after a show at DGBD two years ago featuring the "Battle of Ninjamanz" from Japan. It was a great show! This promises to be a good time too. Write it down and make it out to at least one of the shows!
RSS, PM me and I'll get some flyers out to you to plaster around. Grant might already have some but just in case... |

I was at that show too. The band that really impressed me that night was the Rizlaz. |

I'm planning to make it to the Thursday show so I can take pictures in time for people to see before they go to the other shows. |

No worries, we'll see what we can get done poster-wise this week.
As for shameless bumping of threads, I will justify it with this information passed on to me by the organiser of said show. Here is information for those who do no know about psychobilly:

Notable exceptions to the whole psychobilly equals shlock-horror lyrics idea from Wikipedia are:
The Quakes
The Krewmen
Phantom Rockers
The Meteors
The Guana Bats
Big John Bates
Tiger Army
Mad Sin
Battle of Ninjamanz
People might be interested in knowing that the Phantom Rockers do interesting covers of Tainted Love, and Spin Me Round, and that a lot of psychobilly bands cover tunes from 80's goth and pop bands like the Cure, Depeche Mode, Adam Ant, Bauhaus, etc.
The Japanese punk scene is chock full of psychobilly and rockabilly bands and we will be bringing more of them over in the future.
Canada is currently having something of an explosion in the genre country-wide, with bands ranging across the specturm of the genre such as The Gutter Demons, The Brains, Big John Bates, The Matadors, The Creepshow, The Aftershocks, The Igniters, The Deadcats, Bloodshot Bill, The Farrell Brothers, The B-Movies, The Black Coffee Cowboys, the Rock'n Rebels, and more...
The genre ranges from very thrashy and rhythmic (The Cracks, Battle of Ninjamanz, Banane Metalik, early Quakes and early Tiger Army) to very melodic (Spike, Mad Sin, Nekromantix, The Matadors, current Tiger Army, etc)
Phantom Rockers fall somewhere in the middle in terms of music and lyrical content.
Racetraitor mentioned the Rizlaz, they are a rockabilly band who played mostly covers when they were here. I haven''t thought about them much, but the leader of that band is fairly active in LA and Tokyo. I have a DVD he produced featuring Saturn7, the 5,6,7,8s and Rizlaz. |
Hope that helps! See you at the shows kids!

Mature and restrained, am I? Obviously you haven't gotten the pictures I sent in the mail yet. 2 million won in unmarked bills, you know the drill.
Or else everyone will know what deviant things your wife did. Oh wait, I mean your cat.
Oh, and that's not catnip in there.
