My girlfriend and I will be in San Francisco for 5 days and we want to spend a couple of them in Yosemite Park. I heard though that a lot of people who stay in the cabins stay up late drinking and generally act obnoxious... can anyone here who's done it say what their experience was? Would we be better off staying in a hotel outside the park and driving in and out every day?

HD,

I'll ask my folks (yeah, they're in their mid-fifties, but still...) about that as they travel North and Central America 8 months of the year...most of the time taking up odd jobs in touristy areas to kill time/meet people.

They are bound to have heard something related to what you are enquiring about...

!shoosh,

Ryst

hey, lucky you to be going to sf.
i used to go to yosemite/surrounding areas every year growing up. there are a range of cabins available. when i went with school, we stayed at a place called camp curry, which is mainly a family atmosphere. my opinion is that it's mainly families that go there anyway, so you probably wont have many problems with people. (hungry bears maybe, but not people.)

just a couple of other things:
-you might want to make reservations, if space is even still available. it gets really crowded in the summer. the national park service sometimes has to close the park due to too many cars.
-5 days in sf and you want to spend 4 on yosemite? (one driving to yosemite, 2 hiking, and one driving back?) it looks close on a map, but it's really a long drive. the roads get windey as you get in the mountains.
-it still might be worth it, given the crowds and the drive.

I've stayed in Camp Curry a couple of times; I've also camped a couple of times. But I think you won't be camping.

Camp curry is mostly "tent cabins". It has the frame of a cabin, but canvis like a tent. It is OK for visual privacy, but you can still hear everything around. I never had trouble with people staying up late or being obnoxious or anything like that. Never had that trouble in the campgrounds or in camp curry. The "tent cabins" are expensive for what you get. Forgot just how much, but you are paying for location.
There are rooms for rent also. They are also cramped, and expensive for what you get.
I remember something funny about the shower situation. I think the shower was like $3, or the pool was $3 to swim. But before you swim, they make you take a shower (for free). So better off swimming. Maybe some difference in whether you get a towell or not.
Yosemite could be booked full for the Summer. Better book soon. Camp Curry is in a beautiful location, right in Yosemite valley and near the trailhead for Vernal Falls. The bus shuttle service can take you to the major falls from Camp Curry. Be sure to drive up to Glacier Point at sunset for a "Ranger Talk"; not to be missed. Check and see if an astronomy club is going to set up telescopes on Glacier point if there is no moon.
