I work at a public elementary school, and am thinking of asking for a 6 month extension. My contract ends July 31, and we are planning on leaving Korea when my wifes visa to the US is completed. Has anyone on here gotten a 6 month extension at their public school?

My friend did at a public school, and it worked out well, but (and this is a big BUT)

under Korean law you cannot get a 6month visa. SO she had to sign a fake 1 year contract and had an agreement with the school, she got another one year visa and left after six. So if your school is kool with all that then it can be done, but don't show up to immi asking for a 6month visa extension.

Why not? I did this last year. My contract finished March 30, '06. I wanted to apply for a public school position in the fall of '06 or winter of '07, but if I signed for another year I would miss out on the starting dates. My boss agreed to a 5 month extension and I even signed a new contract for 5 months. We went to immigration to get my extension and there were no problems at all. They stamped my passport and ARC and I was outta there in under 30 minutes.

If you are on an E2 you CAN'T get a 6 month visa BUT you CAN get a 6 month extension to an existing visa. No problem. Take a one page "EXTENSION" contract with the end date clearly marked, signed and stamped by the school along with a new guarentor paper, a copy of the schools business registration, your ARC and your passport.

If you are on an F2 (married to a Korean) then you have no problems at all. Quit when you are ready and no worry about immigration.

There is a very good chance that your school would be willing to let you extend until the end of the school year instead of replacing you at the mid term break.

I stand corrected, thanks for the heads up, but her stupid school still made her go through the motions of a fake "contract" et al. Good to know.
