Geeezus Pete, Jimmy Corrigan RULES!
For my final Critical Theory essay I started off writing a Lacanian study of Jimmy Corrigan and Superman (funny, my straight-edge Critical Theory prof clinged on to my Complete Jimmy Corrigan for, like, two months - I never would have bought it if you hadn't introduced me to it). In the end they were two papers and I went with Lacan and Superman. Funny how America loves its orphans.
All I can say is, Chris Ware, whoah. Pithy. I suspect that Novelty won't get its full credit until after Ware is gone... |

Ok, ok, I take it back. Links are ok too.
Dudes, that's some cool shytte!
I like the Audrey Kowaski or whatever the name was...nice amputee Japanese Mucha-Schiele sort of thing. Oh, I see now--kowasaki--it is Japanese. I thought she was a Pole at first cause I'm half drunk and thought it said kawaski...
Good tattoo choice!
And the Kelvin Mann's cool too, but I can't seem to copy his pics. Goddamn Flashplayer.
Links links links! Pics pics pics! C'mon all you overeducated art lovers, hook me up! I wanna print stuff up for my horribly beige walls, and I'm getting a little tired of my ancient favorites. |

They both are, actually. Garfield is considered banal by most due to it's focus selling, but it's still a creative expression. Acme Novelty Library is also a product, but it's focus is not on the selling aspect.
Comics are much the same thing as music, where there's an uneasy balance between art and product. While the true masters are able to balance both needs, most creators lean one way or another. But both remain an expression of creation.
Regardless of the aims, comics are still an intensely time consuming art-form to create. Requiring a significantly higher level of attention to craft, creativity, and detail than, say, turning on the B&W mode on your digital camera, tilting it five degrees, and pointing it at a Korean.
Isn't learning fun?
