I posted earlier for info on chemistry demos good for the classroom, and have been going great guns with keeping my students entertained.

I made nitrogen triiodide, and it went over with one hell of a bang.

Our school lab doesn't have any bunsen burners. All they have are small containers with wicks. Anyone out there no what I am supposed to use for fuel.

I am trying to come up with a thermite mix of aluminium powder and iron oxide (rust). Anyone know where I can get such a mix in Korea, and if I can what do I use for a starter. I have heard magnesium ribbon is a good starter. Where would I purchase magnesium ribbon in Korea?

The lamp you mention is an alchohol burner. Get some ethanol at your local yak-guk (pharmacy). It is cheap and the advantage is that you can use water to extinguish an alchohol fire.

They are methanol burners.

Methanol should come in 5 litre containers from a supply store.

Don't make thermite . You don't have the safety equipment, it's fucking nasty stuff. I've seen thermite go off in a lab with burning consequences. IT wasn't dry enough to ignite a few magnesium fuses and more thermite added again. more fuses until the crucible was full and it must have dried out enough and been just at the correct mixture to ignite. Burnt through the safety screen, through books that were a meter down the table. wrecked the top of the bench. Hot thermite burning everywhere.

It may sound cool to show of some science experiments but if you haven't got the safety equipment then stick to things which aren't dangerous

You could always do some simple reactivity series reactions with some metals.

Also try the corn starch experiment Thigmotropism

You could also test leaves for the presence of starch.

Giant pendulums are good fun as well as long as you can get a decent swing on it.

Cobalt chloride thermometers

Potassium permanaganate and glycerol if you want to make smoke and fire. Mix in some glucose to create a lot of smoke.

Electrolysis of brine but watch the kids don't sniff in too much chlorine and brurn their mucus glands.

do u want to make an ACTIVE volcano??

make a mud hill and keep a thermocol or paper cup or plastic cup at the top, ofcourse embedded into the mud hill or clay hill
make it look like a volcano with teh cup as the crater

now take some Baking Soda and add red colour to it. cooking colour or water colour anything wud do, not oil paint please!

then pour vinegar into that.., and voila!!!!

else u may keep the vinegar already inside it, and add baking soda to it from top and stir a bit!

blackjack. Thanks for the link.

mrs squirrel. I have done the potassium permanganate and glycerol experiment with my kids, but not with glucose (sugar). Have to try that .

How about coloured smoke. There are green, purple and red smokes. Anyone know how to make them

Safety tip: Remember with alcohol you probably won't be able to see the flame in normal light.
