I had a look at the SMOE contract, and was wondering something about a particular clause regarding vacations:

Quote:
(1) Paid leaves: A total of 21 working days will be provided as official vacation days with agreement from SMOE. Employees working in a school system shall take the leave up to seven workdays during the summer and winter recess respectively.

If you can take seven working days in the summer and seven in the winter, what about the other seven working days? Also, is there usually a two-week paid homeleave bonus for renewers with SMOE?

Tell them to change "seven" to "Ten/Eleven"

Yes. You get 14 calander days + 10/11 days + 5 days for summer/winter camp. You can use all that together and have a month off to be spent entirely as you see fit. However, it can get messy because some schools demand that you return when school re-opens after the summer vacation. I've been lucky, but using your full entitlement can be a difficulty.

This year, I finish summer camp on Aug 2nd and return to school on Aug 27th. Actually my flights are Aug 10th/Aug 25th but I'll try to change them if these camp dates remain certain (camp is whole different, very annoying thing). Last year I finished on Aug 5th and returned to school on Sept 7th (had a week in Thailand and 3 weeks at home).

In their new contracts, you get 21 working days. This is aside from the 5 bonus days from doing a camp and aside from the 10 working days if you renew with SMOE.

Because the time is limited in the summer, you are expected to take 7 days in the summer and 14 days in the winter. You should be able to take more in the summer, especially if you renew or have camp bonus days, but the majority of time off is taken in the winter.
