Plot to blow up JFK airport thwarted
CHRIS MICAUD IN NEW YORK
FOUR terrorist suspects, including a former member of Guyana's parliament, have been arrested in connection with a "chilling" plot to blow up New York's John F Kennedy International Airport.
The four, including a former cargo worker, have been charged with conspiring to attack the airport by planting explosives to ignite major jet fuel tanks and a pipeline, the US Justice Department said last night.

Had it succeeded, a firestorm would have erupted at one of America's busiest airports. The alleged plotters, whose conversations were recorded as part of the investigation into the plot, claimed the attack would have been bigger than the events of September 11, 2001, which killed 2,800. It would have resulted in the destruction of "the whole of Kennedy", one suspect said, according to a statement released by the justice department. He predicted few survivors.
Roslynn Mauskopf, US attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said it was "one of the most chilling plots imaginable," adding: "The devastation that would be caused had this plot succeeded is just unthinkable."
The plot was foiled well before it came to fruition. "There is no threat to air safety or the public related to this plot," FBI spokesman Richard Kolko said in Washington.
Mark Mershon, assistant director in charge of the FBI's New York field office, said there was no indication of any connection with al-Qaeda. "We believe this threat has been fully contained," he said.
The plan had been to set off explosives in a fuel line that feeds John F Kennedy International Airport and runs through residential neighbourhoods. The pipeline takes fuel from a depot in Linden, New Jersey, to the airport. Other lines service LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport.
The alleged plotters conducted surveillance on jet fuel tanks at JFK and the pipeline. They had also taken surveillance video of the targets and took it to Trinidad to review the tape.
Investigators first found out about the plot in January 2006. After that, an informant infiltrated the group.
"This was the ultimate hand-and-glove operation between NYPD and FBI," said US Republican Congressman Peter King.
The plot tapped into an international network of Muslim extremists from the United States, Guyana and Trinidad, the statement said.
Authorities arrested Russell Defreitas, a US citizen native to Guyana and former JFK employee. He was in custody in Brooklyn and was expected to be arraigned yesterday afternoon.
Two other men, Abdul Kadir from Guyana and Kareem Ibrahim of Trinidad, are in custody in Trinidad. A fourth man, Abdel Nur, from Guyana, is still being sought.
Kadir and Nur were associates of Jamaat Al Muslimeen, who was behind a deadly coup attempt in Trinidad in 1990.
"Any time you hit Kennedy, it is the most hurtful thing to the US," Defreitas is alleged to have said in another conversation. "To hit John F Kennedy, wow... they love John F Kennedy like he's the man... if you hit that, this whole country will be mourning. You can kill the man twice.
"Even the Twin Towers can't touch it. This can destroy the economy of America for some time."
Kadir, a Muslim and former member of parliament in Guyana, was arrested in Trinidad for attempting to secure money for "terrorist operations", according to a Guyanese police commander.
Kadir left his position in parliament last year. Muslims make up about 9% of the former Dutch and British colony's 770,000 population, mostly from the Sunni sect.
The arrests mark the latest in a series of alleged homegrown terrorism plots targeting high-profile American landmarks.
A year ago, seven men were arrested in what officials called the early stages of a plot to blow up the Sears Tower in Chicago and destroy FBI offices and other buildings.
A month later, authorities broke up a plot to bomb underwater New York City train tunnels to flood lower Manhattan.
Six people were arrested a month ago in an alleged plot to unleash a bloody rampage on Fort Dix in New Jersey.

FBI Feared JFK Plotters Linked to Top Terrorist
June 02, 2007 12:51 PM
Brian Ross and Richard Esposito Report:
Fbi_feared_jfk__mnFBI agents feared but never confirmed the three men accused of plotting to attack John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York were linked to one of the most wanted al Qaeda leaders, Adnan Shukrijumah, known to have operated out of Guyana and Trinidad.
Officials tell the Blotter on ABCNews.com that they heard repeated references to "Adnan" during the extensive wiretaps conducted on the suspects' telephone conversations, including calls to Guyana and Trinidad.
There is a $5 million reward for information on Shukrijumah, who officials consider extremely dangerous because of the years he spent living in the Miami area and his known ties to al Qaeda. Some of the 9/ll hijackers attended a south Florida mosque run by Shukrijumah's now deceased father.
Shukrijumah left the United States just a few months before September 2001.
A FBI spokesperson in Miami said the squad assigned to track Shukrijumah was aware of the case but that "no connection" to the wanted al Qaeda suspect was found in the JFK case.
The spokesperson said the best available information is that Shukrijumah is with top al Qaeda leaders along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
Authorities in New York today announced arrests in the ongoing counterterror investigation of a plot to blow up the jet fuel pipeline that runs through JFK Airport, officials said.
The plot, authorities stress, was not at an operational stage, and the plotters, who included a former airport employee, had no ability to execute it.
The investigation, which appears to have been ongoing for at least two years, was brought to a conclusion when one suspect was about to leave jurisdictions where U.S. authorities had the ability to monitor his activities.
Sources said the plotters had "indirect" links to overseas terror elements, and the plot had links to Guyana, Trinidad and possibly Germany.
Vic Walter contributed to this report.

They incite violence , teach hate and sponsor terror.
One of the major reasons for terror is that mideast regimes and elites teach hate and incite violence. |

Isha Kadir, the Guyanese suspect's wife, said her husband flew from Guyana to Trinidad on Thursday. She said he was arrested Friday as he was boarding a flight from Trinidad to Venezuela, where he planned to pick up a travel visa to attend an Islamic religious conference in Iran.

They talked about that over the phone? Good think terrorists are too stupid to know that current technology permits the government to monitor phone conversations for certain keywords.
Reminds me of a story a judge told me a while ago. A biker was on trial for smuggling drugs across the Canada-US border. His wife and family were present as a show of support. They made sure to put up a show for the reporters before entering the courtroom, telling them that the cops were lying, that the biker was innocent. When it came time to present its evidence, the crown played the recording of a phone conversation the biker had with his buyer in the US. The guy could be heard agreeing to a price and then setting the time and place to meet... and just before he hung up he added, "Hey, when I come over make sure you set me up with the same lady as last time. She was a really good @#$@.". |

Of course wiretaps save lives. There is no one, Democrat or Republican, that is against wiretaps. Republicans are for wiretaps without institutional safeguards to prevent abuse. Democrats are for wiretaps with institutional safeguards to prevent abuse. Seem like two pro-wiretap arguments to me. |
