Does anyone know any white people in the US or Canada that pretend to act like they are from the ghetto when they're not? Talking like "gangstas" etc.?
Kind of ridiculous wouldn't you think?
I find it just as ridiculous that on this very board there are a significant number of lonely white guys trying to act like they are Koreans. Let me be more specific. It's obnoxious when, in a post, some guy (it's usually always a guy) types Hangul letters or uses the Korean name for something when it isn't needed.
It's one thing when you are trying to help someone on the board and you type the Korean letters in order to help the person recognize the word so they can buy the item in the store. Using Hangul to help "identify" something that isn't usually transliterated into English is very helpful.
But, using Hangul letters simply to "show off" or be a poser Korean is just pathetic. I've read many posts on this board where people would type the Korean letters for subway stops! Why the heck would they do that? It seems like a snot that knows Latin, using Latin terms around people who can't speak latin, just to be "sophisticated."
I can read Korean all day long, but I know that most people on this board can't. This is an English language board. So use English. Type the hangul only when needed to HELP someone. Rather than make Dave's a place that features arrogant snots, perhaps we should make Dave's a friendly place. A place that's accessable, even for the fresh off the boat westerner that doesn't know a word of Korean.
Stop trying to impress us. It doesn't work. You just look pathetic and socially inept. Desperate, even.
And stupid. Like Malibu's Most Wanted -- Korean Style.

From your bitter post I'm assuming you can't speak much Korean, and seeing other westerners who can makes you feel insecure.
There can be any number of reasons for posting in Hangeul, none of which make the poster an "arrogant snot".
For example:
- The poster thinks that the romanization of Hangeul/Hangul/Hankul/Hankool sucks. It's actually an impediment to learning the language. Korean words should be written in Korean, and English words in English. Writing in Hangeul avoids any misunderstanding, whereas its often hard to tell which word a poster is using if they use our alphabet.
- The poster likes to practise their Korean as much as possible.
Also, this is a forum about Korea, for people who live in Korea. I would think a forum about Latin would have people posting in Latin too.
If you live and work here and can't read Hangeul, then you are the arrogant snot who should go home. Take four hours and learn it, use the posts here with the odd syllable or two as practise, and start enjoying the country on a different level. If you can read it, then what's the problem?
Your "wannabe gangsta" analogy is flawed too. Are Koreans who post in English in forums based in your country wannabe westerners? Your post is just too ridiculous.
I don't see any poser Koreans, just people trying to learn the langauge of the place they're in, which is a good thing. |

If it's an ENGLISH forum, then no, Koreans aren't wannabe Westerners. If a Korean is posting in English on an Korean forum, then yes, they are just being snots.
As far as wanting to practice Korean, perhaps practice Korean with Koreans on a Korean forum.
And this isn't a "Korean" forum. This is a forum for English teachers.
And yes, I can read Korean perfectly. The problem is that this is a forum with which to HELP people. When the majority of English teachers here CAN'T read Korean, then it just makes the forum seem unhelpful. Perhaps the Korean and Romanization would be helpful.
I belong to many forums relating to music production and such and I've found that the Dave's forum is among the worst regarding overall helpfulness towards people. If someone posts a simple question on one of my music forums, people bend over backwards to help them with their problem.
Here, it seems like a few people are genuinely helpful, but there's an abundance of posts that simply attack the question. Childish stuff.
Go look on the Buy/Sell Forum. Someone's giving away a cat for example, and some jerk has to post a snide response.

It isn't just the superiority attitude about using Korean, it's about the loser, lowlife attitude of bedroom snipers that enjoy just being donkeys.
Why must Dave's be filled with losers with nothing better to do than snipe. The show-off use of hangul is just the tip of the problem.
Like I said, it's one thing to provide Hangul in a helpful situation (i.e How do I say X) but it's another just to use it to be a self-righteous dork. |

I can see your point in when people use hangeul or romanized hangeul when there is absolutely no need for it, but I don't think anyone wants to be Korean. |

If you were talking about writing in French, I'd support you all the way.

It's not always about showing off, there's another reason I can think of, fun, pure and simple. A sense of play is healthy. And play with language, especially the native language of the country you're in, and especially when you're a language teacher, has got to be healthy. And this forum is about a whole lot more than "help", that is a small part of it. It's a huge discussion board, and most of it is debate and banter.
You seem bitter, insecure, small minded, and lacking in social skills. I mean, trying to change the way people relate on a message board, that shows profound ignorance. People are gonna do what they're gonna do, and not change that for you. A message board is an organic thing, you can't control it. Either bite the bullet or get knobbed. |

I think the romanization is confusing.
I'm White and lived in a Black neighborhood for six years.
I see no connection. |
