But in my travels I've found anti-British attitudes from North Americans far outnumber the anti-American attitudes from Britons.
One only has to read these forums to work that one out. |
Since on these forums North Americans VASTLY outnumber the British that should be no suprise. I think you'll need to dig a little deeper than that. |

| What an hilarious thread. Makes Daves worthwhile so I can encounter such blatant numbskullery. I'm Irish btw and I would say Brits are nowhere near as hostile to Americans as many other European nations including France, Grmany and indeed Ireland. Most of this is purely political though. |

Well, one way of looking at it is that he IS in fact helping to prove my point. He obviously hates Americans and female Americans especially. I think his kind is quite normal in the UK and it's just one reason why I have no desire to visit the country. |
"you think his kind is quite normal in the UK" [Yes, I think he's a normal Brit, absolutely]
how judgemental, ignorant and embarrassingly prejudiced are you?
[You think that because I'm calling it like it is? Spinoza is a typical example of an average Brit. I've encountered his kind quite a few times over the past years. I have the experience. So this isn't about prejudice. It's about an observation combined with experiences, which make this a bias. Brits are constantly bad mouthing Americans. I can't tell you how many times I've had Brits offer their empathy saying such things as, "It must be really difficult for you as an American in this day and age with all the America bashing going around. Geez and my country is really bad about that. Personally..." So why the hell would I want to visit a country with a bunch of arrogant, snobs who sit around with nothing better to do than bash Americans and everything to do with America?]
despite being the OP, i would avoid future postings in this thread if i were you. [Why don't you avoid posting on this thread? If you don't like it leave]
you have outed yourself as a fool. [You have no defense so you must resort to personal insults out of defense. That makes you the fool] |
There is a great deal of truth in everything I am saying. Brits will deny the fact that they hate Americans. They'll cover it up (contest it even) and a lot of Americans will be fooled easily because they don't travel much. But not this one! You can't go around bashing Americans left right and center and then turn around and call them your friends because there will be a backlash. Now I've seen plenty of anti-Americanisms from Brits on this board. I've seen a few really nasty ones come on here from Big Bird, especially. They have been deleted by the mods on here. |
i am embarrassed for you. you cannot generalise about a whole nation of people and expect to be taken seriously.
i don't know why you have such a huge chip on your shoulder, but you should lighten up a bit.
a little humour goes a long way. all this anger's going to eat you up baby. |

I'm being offered a job in London (Indian management). I like Indian people/culture! Salary is 4,500 British pounds/month with no housing. Should I take it? Will I experience any anti-Americanism there? Is that a good salary for London? I need to compare that offer with one I'm getting in the Middle East. Actually, I'm more interested in the Middle East because I really like Arabs and the location also has a very large population of Indians. So I'm guessing that I'll get far less hassle in the Middle East than in London. There is no way Im going to walk around London with my head down saying Im Canadian. The position in the Middle East pays $3,500 US dollars per month. Housing and all expenses are paid including utilities, transportation and there are no taxes deducted.
Yes, I AM being serious! |

Do you really think you'll cop less flak in the Middle East being an American than in London? Really?
Maybe you'll be less aware of it in the ME if you don't know the language, but London seems an obvious choice to me. Espicially since there's almost 3 times the money on offer (maybe only two times if you consider the housing).
I think the whole thing's overblown in any case. If you read the comments section of the OP article, it's filled with American expats who say they've lived in the UK for years and never experienced any comparable discrimination. |

Well, I just signed a short-term contract for the Middle-East so I have time to consider the offer in London. I leave very soon. I'll let you know how it all goes!!! Actually, they speak English quite well where I will be going so I don't think the language should be a problem. Anyway, I've always been fascinated with the Middle-East so I'm very excited! The important thing is my happiness, not just the money. |

Well, stick around. Thanks for the information! Actually, I think the political flaming is really just a front for something deep seeded. Use the history. The English are just ashamed they have lost most of what they've managed to conquer since the dark ages (including Ireland). Most of this has to do with the two WWs and America saving their asses BOTH times. They are jealous of all our successes and the fact that they now must become allied with the USA in order to maintain protection from their enemies. They have many! |

So let me get this straight....
You read an article on the internet in which most of the Americans quoted (who btw had direct experience of living in the UK and didn't get their info from the web) said they had zero problems living in the UK and......
...... due to some selective reading from this article, you are considering turning down a wonderful opportunity to work in one of the most interesting cities in the world to work in a 3rd world hellhole for inferior money where you would struggle to get a beer.
You couldn't make it up.
Banter aside, I lived in London for 25 years, met numerous nationalities and trust me your biggest problems will be cost of living (4500 a month is good, but it'll go fast if you're not careful) and certain areas are a bit dodgy late at night.
Hometown bias aside, London is IMVHO one of the very few cities (New York and Hong Kong being the other two of it's ilk I've been to) where the colour of your passport and your place of birth are irrevelant....as long as you are cool people will see you as a local.....be you a spoilt backpacker from Sydney or an iliterate FOB from Bangaldesh you will be a Londoner. |

Hey V,
Congrats on going to The ME. I personally hope you never go to London because if you get worked up over ONE article, I don't want to be there if someone said something even jokingly to you about being American there.... YIKES!
Best of luck! |

Oh yes, yes. I forgot
8.) Accuse the citizens of being "hypersensitive" who take offense to: very derogatory slurs; insults to their country/culture/people; being bashed bashed/flamed/abused for being part of the unpopular majority; and, attempt to bring the issue to people's conscience. |

Israel is in the Middle East. The last time I was there, the attitude was intensely pro American.
A couple of days after 9/11 I replaced the Canadian flags on my pack with American ones. I have traveled Yurup twice with that pack and got an occaisional hard look. My response would have suited an American well. The one finger salute respresents my disdain. |

Ah yes, here is wisdom: to avoid the outrageous racism allegedly experienced by one American in London this Indian culture loving fellow is off to the hugely pro-American Arab Middle East for one-third of the pay in UK.
Evolution was not universal. |

Heavens, really? And there we all were under the curious delusion that Israel was a hotbed for anti-Americanism and Islamic extremism. |
