PC-Bang was because I was in Andong waiting for the next performance.. went for a run to get some fast-food or something.. and stopped at PC-Bang for 45 minutes.. I wouldn't have made this whole thing up.. sheesh!! Its not THAT great..!! |
Oops, I didn't mean to imply that. I was just wondering what sort of Internet magic you have up your sleeve.
It was a great event, but I saw so little of it. Next year I will set aside a block of time and stay a couple of days. |

Its a two hour bus ride from Pohang. We just went for the day, but had a pretty good time. It was my first tme seeing the Capoiera, so that was good.
The New Zealand show was ruined for me because when the Maoris came on, the announcer said something about a traditional Maori martial art. My New Zealand buddy that I was with commented on the fact that the Maoris didn't have martial art until just recentally. To our surprise, the Maoris videotaper was right next to us and he spent the next minute or two cursing at us and making threats toward us. Kind of gave me a negative impression of them...
I think it should have been called the kite festival insted given the copious amouts of kites that were being flown. Actaully, and kind of sadly, my favorite part of the whole day was that enormous kite that I guessed to be 300 yards long...cool stuff. |

Its I felt like I set aside enough time.. but it wasn't quite enough..
We left on Friday.. went to Hahoe.. kind of just hung around there and got a MinBak..
Saturday I saw one Korean performance in Hanoe.. then went to Andong to explore all of that.. then back to Hahoe to see the Fire at the end on that beach-river..
Sunday made our way back..
Went too quickly.. also there isn't any hot water in the MinBaks.. so none of us were able to take a shower.. sheesh first thing I did at home was take a nice long hot shower..
I'd like to go to that festival again.. had a great time.. we spent most of the time in Hahoe.. which was cool.. but maybe next time I'd focus on Andong and do the afternoon run to Hahoe.. (exact opposite) |

Actually the Maori was misleading.. they messed up as they were doing the introduction for the "Capoiera".. as actually that was martial arts related.. when the Europeans brought the Africans to Brazil.. the Africans practiced that as a dance to music.. as a way to keep their 'fighting skills' up-to-date without it looking like they were getting ready to kick the Europeans ass!!
The only thing about that though is that I'm sure the Europeans were aware of what they were doing.. just chose to let them do it.. rather than the historical idea that the Europeans were too dumb to know it wasn't a dance or whatever.. but anyhow.. its pretty cool!!
Regarding the show itself.. did you read the 'english' up on the monitor? It was really really really bad.. I read a little from time to time out of curiousity.. but it just didn't make any logical sense..
Also, I must have sat by the other cameraman.. as I was somewhat to the left of the one on the left side.. but I don't recall seeing any other foreigners immediately around me..
Regarding the kites.. those were pretty cool.. and one kite landed during the Brazilian performance.. I believe in front of your cameraman.. but the string landed over top of the cameraman on my side.. the kites were cool.. and I do remember the very large one with many many tails.. |

I was on the other side of the stage. Towards the end of the Maori performance, another guy got up with them and danced but was not in traditional dress...that was the guy who cursed at us.
Regarding the martial arts thing... Im pretty sure they said 'the Maori martial art,' but not positive. My New Zealand buddy was saying that the Maori have been developing a bit of a martial art so that they can teach the younger generations how to use the traditional weapons. Thats the extent of my knowledge on the subject though. |

Yeah, that guy that cussed and threatened me really stunk my buzz for about 1 minute. We were looking for you Tiger beer, to see if you wanted a few quiet ones with the Pohangsters, but WTF said you were a big guy with a beard, I think he was on the soju again. |

Yeah, they did say Maori.. then proceeded to describe 'capoira' in detail. I recall that as well.. because I remember they said it was a slave dance that they disguised from their masters.. etc., etc.. and I was thinking its so strange that the Maori is so similar to Capoiera..
Oh, to inexhale, actually I'm kind of a thin guy without a beard.. I use to have a goatee.. BUT.. all the Koreans told me I'd look so much better without the goatee.. so breaking into peer pressure I conceded.. dropped the beard.. and am now the 'most popular man in korea'.. (well.. of the ones who grew up in Michigan, had a goatee, shaved it, has blond hair, and a previous red goatee, works at the school that I work at, and lives in the same house as me).. if you put those qualifiers in as well.. |
