I was in Cambodia for the last few days and I have to say that the western tourists there are total assclowns. Brits, Germans, French, Americans... they swagger around obliviously in their group tours, talking too loud and acting obnoxiously with no respect for the ancient temples.
And the cameras! Some people just walked around videotaping everything without ever looking up from the camera. Apparently everyone has to take a picture of themselves picking the noses of the giant faces. That's cool. Then I went to a dinner show of traditional dancing and holy jumping jesus did everybody have to jump up and rudely take pictures all night long, using their flashes right in the performers faces of course. I had to ask a few of them to stop standing directly in front of me. The best was one guy who took a couple pictures and then, instead of watching the performance, just started inspecting his pictures!
And their appearances... most of these people have very obviously never missed a meal in their lives yet they condescend to the kids trying to sell them water or postcards. Many of the rest were hippies too self-absorbed in their own cockamamie spirituality to have much appreciation for the original purposes of the temples themselves.
Let's not even mention the sex tourists. Westerners in SE Asia -- you are ASSCLOWNS. |

If you think Cambodia's bad, you should see India. I swear some of the people you see there should be put down.
All in all, I completely agree. 80% of the people I met in Siem Reap last time were only "doing" Angkor for a day, two tops, because it was "too expensive" or "boring" but would spend all day drinking or smoking themselves stupid and then turn around and say how much they loved 'Cambodian' (not Khmer) culture.

But you have to be honest the standard tourist sucks in general. I've lived in asia for several years (including Thailand, which sold it's soul to tourists many years ago) and I also worked in the tourist industry in the states. I doesn't matter if you are Korean going for the bali bali thing, the Group from Taiwan on a boat trying to snorkel whilst wearing a full wet suit, life jacket and sitting in a lifesaver, or even the Japanese who could care less about you or the culture you live in, but just want a picture of your monument. I used to think that the western sex tourists were the worst until i found out that lots Japanese and quite a few Korean and Taiwanese business men go to Thailand and nail all the lady boys. In the states I had to clean up after Texans...it sucked, but it wasn't the worst I've seen...
they're all alike just different shades. |

Korea, same same.
Basically they all dress like and look like English teachers so it's really hard to tell who is who.
Except for the ones in the business suits, who could be office workers or here on convention. |

When I was in the Czech Republic, the worst tourists were the Germans. They were loud, rude and obnoxious. My Czech friends used to joke that German (male) tourists brought their wives a gift that they didn't expect!
(Ok, ok...I guess it's understandable when every kiosk sells the "Sex Guide to Prague/Praha in about 10 languages!! ) |

There was an article a couple months ago about Brits in Eastern Europe...
But tourists tend to be tourists. Mostly, they suck, but it's not usually their fault (though sometimes they deserve to be hit by a semi). |

If you have the misfortune of going to Goa, you'll understand what I mean. |

Hey,
I think everyone is agreeing that the above statement is true. What I have not decided is how to go about DISCOURAGING this.
We want to let each other live and let live and peoplkea re naturally allowed to party and have a good time, yet I do not want to be bagged with these guys. It is not enough just to CONVINCE them that it is not a good idea?
Me: That's your twentieth beer and fourth Korean girl you've chatted up and tried to go home with tonight - d'ya think it is time to go home?
AC: RAAAAGHHH **** off and before you do give me a beer.
AC's are a global phenomenon - is there no vaccination for this condition?
Cheers,
Michelle |

Minimally you should at least find out what appropriate dress is in the country you're visiting. What some Westerners wear in India is pretty awful, then they wonder why they're treated badly. Not to mention that makes things that much harder even for those of us who are dressed appropriately. |

I heard this clothing commentary before regarding westerners touring SE Asia. It was said the locals would wonder, if they have enough money to travel, being comparatively wealthy, why do they dress so poorly? I know why. It's hot and humid (or rainy) and dirty/polluted in a lot of those places. I think sandals and shorts and Guns N Roses T-shirts are appropriate clothes for backpackers partying in BKK or Saigon or wherever. Sweating is not fun wearing a shirt and tie. |
