I was told I gotta make a "Golden Bell" quiz show for an English camp coming up. I've never seen or heard of it.

Anyone know anything about Golden Bell? Is it anything like Jeopardy?

It is a very famous tv show here in Korea. High schools are selected on merit to participate. I created a golden bell show for a camp last year.

You start with a hundred students sitting in front of you in a big square. Each student needs a small white board, black marker and board eraser. Each student is allocated a number from 1 to 100.

You then need to make a range of English questions. My questions ranged from general knowledge, history, science, entertainment, English and so on. Try to make a variety of questions. Questions need to be graded from easy to difficult.

Start with easy questions first. Ask a question and allow the students a minute to answer the question. Each student writes his/her answer on the white board and when asked they need to show the white board to a set of teachers who stand in front. The students who answered the question incorrectly need to leave the game. The students with correct answers continue to the next question. As the game progresses you increase the level of difficulty. The aim is to have a single student left at the end of the game.

I prepared around 50 questions for my game. I had some extra questions in hand just in case. If there is only one student left in the game and there are still questions remaining, then the student needs to answer all the remianing questions to be the winner.

Try to watch the tv show. It will give you a good idea of how it is done. I think it is braodcasted on KBS.

I have both an advanced and low level Golden Bell game in my powerpoint games folder.

Generally though, Koreans want the traditional style. No multiple choice. You must write the answer on a dry board, hold it up and be counted. Correct stay, incorrect leave.....

I would also use my Fling the Teacher game/generator for these multiple choice style golden bell games. (scroll and find in the same folder above) Put the questions into the generator and those students choosing incorrectly , leave. They have an option of A / B C or D and hold up a card to reply for these.

If you're doing it with a group that's not so large I'd suggest you award points for right answers and keep track of the score on a grid sheet, rather than eliminating players. If you do the latter then for much of the game the ones standing on the sidelines aren't really paying attention and have no chance to participate.

Another important sub-rule in Golden Bell is re-entrance to the game. If you have to do it where you eliminate players, once 50% are eliminated ask a yes / no question, make the right sideline 'yes' and the left sideline 'no', and tell the eliminated players to move to which side they think represents the right answer. Then the players on the correct side get to re-enter the game. This way more students are participating for a longer time.

You can also get the eliminated players' attention by offering periodic one-off prizes for questions that everyone, those playing and those eliminated, can answer. This also helps re-focus everyone's attention on the game after a lot have been eliminated.
