No, silly. That God sent His only son to die for our sins. |

i't s pretty strange eh?
It's interesting what pest2 said about it being succesful because it is compatible with the highly capitalistic aspects of korean society. I would agree with this, the church has always gone hand inhand with money grabbing, and seems a lot more open to reinterpreting their sacred teachings to suit those in power than Buddhists, but I find it surprising that they have adopted christianity because of this, unlike European nations which have become more secular as they become more capitalistic |

| How does a non-Christian get service at a Christian business in Korea? It seems like when I'm banned from a business, they almost always have a Christmas tree up or crosses around their necks. |

I don't know if anyone brought this up yet, but in the last few months MBC has been running doc(s) about how the Holy-Than-Thou Christian Mega Churches are actually real estate scams. The pastors are taking the millions in donations and instead of i don't know helping the poor, they are using it to buy land in the red hot real estate market. Now this is nothing new as the "Church" has always just been a real estate agent to Rome/London/Constantinople/Medina anyway but in typical Korean-chaebol style, these same pastors are "appointing" their heirs, i.e. their sons. In true Kim Jong-il fashion these churches are taking money and making the Pastor's family filthy rich. God Bless, indeed.
Now bring on the religion apologists who defend the evil that is committed in the name of their faith. |

| I always tell people that American Christianity took off so well in Korea because Koreans are so concerned with materialism and showing off, just like Americans, and Christianity is the perfect religion to support that ethos while offering a clean conscience. |

Yeah, Europe definitely took a way different path. Still, even up until 100 years ago, Northern Europeans started to prosper more than those in the South because of the differences between catholicism and protestantism... read Max Weber's "protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism". I'd guess Europe is overally becoming more secular now because, whereas Korea is in a phase of rapid development and economic growth that requires people here to be 'good little protestants,' Europe is in a post-material phase in which people there already have thier basic needs met and are trying to improve thier lifestyles.... (like, go to Europe and try to find a store open on a Sunday... everyone is on holiday alot of the time because there's that big idea you should enjoy your life rather than waste it away making money all the time). But thats just my guess... |

Baah!
Filthy happy-clappers...they may love themselves up a lot, but they're not as widespread as they claim. They're just extremely loud. I figure about thirty percent of Koreans, maybe forty percent tops, are Christian-esque, but only about thirty or forty percent of that actually believes all that stone-age death-cult after-life dogvomit.
The rest of the 'believers' are just social-climbers--which is, in my mind, preferable to being a duped half-wit.
I wonder what the percentages are like up north, with 'who actually believes in kimilsungism' vs. 'people who merely spout the stuff, knowing the alternative is less profitable.' |

Not that I think there is anything wrong with it, I just am puzzled why more Koreans go to church every week than anywhere else I've ever been, I lived in Italy and you didn't meet as many practicing christians as you do here, and I've never lived there but I've met loads of Spanish and Irish people and Koreans seem to be more christian than them
anyone got any ideas why? |
Maybe not in numbers, but certainly in fervor. They tend to be of the evangelical kind here. |
