Just thought I'd let y'all know.
I got a job teaching at a charter school in Houston.
Woohoo! Best part is: this seriously cuts down the amount of time I'm gonna have to stay with my parents when I get home.

The best of luck to you!!!
How did you find the job? Didn't you have to be there for the interview? |

Yeah, that's been an issue. I've been having a hard time getting anyone to even acknowledge my resume, let alone request interviews. But, this school was interested enough that we worked around the geography problem. We had telephone interviews and I sent them a DVD I made of one of my classes. |

well Houston in the summertime feels a lot like Seoul, hot and humid so there will be no problems adjusting.
best advice, get to austin as much as you can, its only 2 1/2-3 hours depending on how fast you drive
glad to see the schools do acknowledge teaching here as i'm thinking of doing what you did in about 2-3 years |

Let me know where to sign when Texas wants to break away from the other 49 states. Cheers!
Seriously, though, I hope you enjoy your time there. |

I'm most likely going to do a second year at my school, but after that
I might teach in the US. Do you have a certification. Was the charter
school willing to take you without a certification? |

Texas is very desperate for teachers especially in Houston and Dallas, and it is for a good reason. Actually, for many good reasons. However, some charter schools outside of Houston should be somewhat okay. I have an old pal from Alberta who teaches somewhere outside of Houston.
I taught in Dallas before. |

I'm still waiting to hear if the year I put in at a hagwon will count for anything. The other 3 years I spent here were (are still!) at an accredited foreign school, so they count for experience.

I have been certified in Utah and Alaska, although both lapsed since I've been here. I reapplied in Utah, and should have a new cert. in about a month. The rules for charter schools can be a bit more relaxed than regular public schools, but they do still have to abide by NCLB.
In my case, Texas will allow you to teach at a charter school if you have 20-something credit hours in the subject. They encourage you to get certified in Texas, but it isn't required like it is for mainstream public schools.
That's Texas though. Charter laws vary from state to state (4 states don't even have 'em). |

I'm certified in Texas for life (before those type of certifications were eliminated) but I havent used it since 1998 so I'm really wondering how I'd be recieved after 10-15 years of univ teaching here. I'm planning to email some districts over the summer as in 2-3 years we are thinking of moving back for good
My wife did talk to a charter school in Austin while home this past winter, she was impressed with it and had encouraged me to talk to them.
BTW if you are interested in an alternative certification in Texas, check with various regional education service centers on their programs. If you qualify they will let you teach while earning certification, Region XIII covers Austin |

When my wife and I move back to the states later this year, we may move to Houston. I am certified in Mississippi, but it is about to lapse at the end of this month. I am trying to look now for a job in the Houston area. What is a website I can find some information on this ? |

There are so many websites. I used k12jobs.com, schoolspring.com and educationamerica.com.
nais.org is a good one for independent private schools.

My parents lived in Dallas for about 10 years. They left because they didnt want to put 5 kids through the Dallas public school system. Has anything changed in twenty years? |
