Had Rin, yes. Thongnaipan-yai, not so much. Take the Big Buddha Ferry to Thongsala, and drive through the jungle for an hour in the back of a pickup truck.
Been there three years in a row for winter vacation. Can't get enough of the place. |

How does Yai compare to Noi? I've been to the latter and loved it. Accommodation is cheap as chips too. And that drive through the jungle sucks - especially at night or right after a rainstorm - but completely worth it when you see the beach in the distance on the horizon.
Koh Chang can be nice, but bloody expensive (although nothing compared to Ko Samet, or even worse.....Phuket). One of the outlying islands would be cool to hang out on if you're into seclusion, but might be a bit short if you've only got 5 days. |

| What???? Awesome food in the Philippines? Well, they sure must have been hiding it when I was there. The only thing I saw were some huge pots full of stuff that was not very appealing. Plus, everyone called me JOE "hey joe, where you going, hey joe, you want a tatoo?" |
Where were you, hanging out in Manila or chasing the bar girls up in Angeles?
Get out of Luzon and it is a different world.
Boracay is great for a 5 day get away. So is Alona beach.
Both are easy to get to.
Boracay - catch a flight to either Manila or Cebu (get your best price) and they catch a domestic flight on SeaAir http://www.flyseair.com/ or Asian http://www.asianspirit.com/ spirit to CATICLAN.
Do NOT take a flight on PAL or Air Phillipines from Manila to Kalibo. This will leave you 2 hours away from Boracay and you will need to take an over crowded mini-bus (known locally as a V-hire).
There are lots of flights every day from both locations (Cebu and Manila). Cost is about 100k per person / round trip.
You can also get air / transfers / hotel / breakfast packages from SeaAir for about 250k won per person per week.
It is just about as easy to get to Alona beach. Fly into Manila and catch the breakfast flight to Tagbilaran or fly into Cebu and take the fast ferry to Tagbilaran. Either way you will leave here late in the evening and be there about noon. Take a walk down the beach and pick a resort. Prices range from $20-100 per night per room. I like the Alona tropical resort but there are lots of others that are OK (price and quality) too.
Leave here in the evening after work and enjoy 5 days down there instead of spending 2 of your days travelling.

Heres what I want:
Cheap accomodation.
Good rum.
Good food.
Not a lot of foreigners (or locals).
Clean beaches.
Possible access to hashish, or marijuana.
Decent airfare.
No in your face prostitutes. |

Considering your criteria, Taiwan, Kenting, to be precise seems to be a decent option. The beach is decent accomodation is reasonably cheap (not thailand or vietnam cheap but decent), good food, access to umm stuff , but beware that stuff is often illegal and punnished harshly if found, no hookers, and access to a big city (Kaohsiung) close by. Xaoi li ocho sp? is also very nice.
For all of your criteria, Thailand and Cambodia are obvious choices. Vietnam is great but there are some hoops to jump through just to get in and remember that it is a heavily socialist country. Vietnam is the kinda place you need to spend weeks in not days. If you are set on nam' go to Mui Ne, Hoi an or Halong bay (cat ba island), though it would be impossible to do any more than one of these in that time frame.
Go to Phuket, stay away from Patong beach. Kata, kamala and evven surin were all great and the hooker factor is minimalized. Beaches are nicer in kata and kamala too. |
