I was just talking to a friend of mine at a middle school in Incheon. The Incheon education office organizes a 1 week camp program that they are required to teach during summer vacation. However, each teacher gets paid extra for the camp at 25,000 per hour. Apparently it ends up at almost a million won extra for that week.

So teachers in Seoul, Kangnam and other city programs: do you get paid extra for your education office organized camps?

Seoul public school teachers get paid if the camp is a sleepaway camp due to the evening and weekend hours put in. Pay ranges from district ot district. Camps at school and in school hours don't pay extra.

It's either in SMOE's contract or the additional "handbook" for foreign teachers. Either way, all people doing sleepaway district camps get paid extra money. What is in the contract is getting paid overtime, and since you stay there night and day, that overtime adds up.

I was offered a position to work at a camp in Gyeonggi and will be paid 2million for 13 days of work. The downside is that I have to sleep there even though the location is only 40 minutes via bus, 25 by car. Luckily every teacher will get their own room though

I'd be pretty upset if I had to teach during Winter/Summer break and not get paid extra for it.

I guess I should elaborate on my own situation:

Our contracts say two weeks vacation for summer and two weeks for winter. We go away to Daechun for a one week overnight camp. It appears that about half of the teachers here are getting a trade off of another week vacation due to the fact that they have to do an overnighter for a week. The other half are still being told by city hall to that they must do a one week school camp because "it's in the contract." Kind of a pretty shitty situation

Definitely, and well.

I would rather the precedent not get set in the other direction - no pay for summer and winter camps (or any extra work for that matter).

Education offices need to realize the going rate in Korea for an hour of English teaching is 50,000 won.

I'm in the same city as crazy arcade and have gone over this with the city before. The issue is that our contract is with the city so they can mandate doing camp work, and in our case rather than being paid over time, we get an extra week of vacation essentially granting us three weeks during the summer and winter, two from the contract and one from the city. That is the 'payment' we receive. If we opt to be paid or try to force the issue I would think we'll almost certainly lose that bonus week of vacation.

On that issue, the bonus week is only a bonus week for some people, since some schools tell their teachers they don't have to come in until they have classes.

To that end, I'm not sure there's anything we can do, perse. The option seems to be to lose the extra week or get paid.
