I think the police by and large in Korea know about the illegal sex trade, but don't do anything about it.
A shame. A real shame. |
This one goes beyond illegal sex trade (I have not againt a adult female selling services to adult males, both agreeing with the informal contract, and in full respect of each others individuality)
The issue here is a 15 year old girl, captured, abused (Physically and Mentally) for 6 monts with 800 Adult men going at it, with not a touch of remorse.
800 times raped at the age of 15, what will become of the person? |

I encourage you to lool at a map sometime. If you can then say Korea is anywhere near SE Asia or even in a southern part of Asia, then I will be shocked. |
If you want to get specific, East Asia, I stand corrected. |

Pkang...
I agree that other countries have as much or more prostitution than Korea, but the issue here is how the authorities will deal with this situation, especially once they start tracking down the guys who participated...
How can you defend it if the authorities have the phone numbers but don't track them down?
Or if they find the guys, and they only have to pay a 500,000 won fine or something?
What do you think would be an acceptable punishment for the people involved in this...incident?
I like Korea, but if these men don't get severely punished for raping an imprisoned 13-year old girl, then yes...there's something wrong with the Korean legal system. |

Sure, I agree with you. I just bring up the topic of these "entertainment establishments" to illustrate how hard it appears the police are working on crime in this country and Korean society's acceptance of the crime. Near my school there are 6 of these windowless cafes within a two block area.
I even had a middle school student telling me about the "not good barbershops". It seems like everybody knows what's going on, but no one wants to do anything about it.
Funny how I didn't see these shops all over the place when I visited Japan and China. While they also may exist there, they're not sitting next to the convenience store. |

I'd like to see the figures per capita.
Where's Real Reality when you need him?
I would think South Korea ranks at or near the top. |

I don't know the stats, but I do remember reading from a credible source that Korea spends somewhere between 4-6% of its GNP on prostitution and prostitution related things. Be it a *beep*, a 'helper' in the singing room, etc.
I have read a lot of nasty things that have gone down in Korea since I got here. I've seen a lot of nasty things too. I would have to say that this is the worst, and lowest thing I have heard so far. I have never had less respect for Korean men as I do right now.
No offense to any Korean men on here who do not partake in prostitution. I am glad you are the exception to the rule.

Not to nitpick, but this was prostituted rape. It is qualitatively different than the act of two adult individuals voluntarily exchanging money for an orgasm. I don't think we should link the two.
This was a disgusting crime. 800 men raped this poor girl, and I'd imagine that every single one knew exactly what he was doing (or the situation of the girl he was doing it to, more specifically). I'm my opinion, the men didn't care because they live in a society that tends to not punish men for crimes against women. The ajosi = king narrative has got to come falling down. Men must toss aside this idea that, for virtue of being a man, they are entitled to do what they please to women.
Only Korean women can bring about this change. I have full faith that they will. |

You must have had blinders on. They are ubiquitous. One was directly across from the front gate of a top middle school I used to visit for research purposes. The school is next to the government compound where the top leaders live, which is ironic.
The difference is that this kind of deliberate exploitation on such a scale in such a venue with a girl of this age would not be tolerated in China and most places. Sadly, girls even younger are forced into such a dismal existence in parts of India and Myanmar these days.
The Korean police are about as worthless as warm spit. |

I suppose the Korean logic is that she is a girl, she ran away from home, her life is somewhat ruined, but if they imprison all these men the lives of their families and children will be ruined. It is hard to imagine some of these men may have children her age, but yet would do that and one person who did that was a medical doctor. Crazy things happen in every country in the world including in North America and Europe, but the Korean society needs to take more action to create a certain cultural change. Frankly, I would be nervous if I were a Korean woman and married to a Korean male with all the temptations of alcohol and room salon women etc.... It would take a lot of be faithful in many cases. |

Im wondering this. So the girl was raped by 800 guys. After the first few hundred or so she must have been in a very bad state. The article even said she had multiple visible injuries.
So lets say guy number 657 comes in, sees the wretched condition of the girl, and still hits it anyway? Sick. Take a pass man. There are more than enough prostitutes to go around in Korea. Find a viable one.. |

| But not many other ones that are that young. Perhaps we have a large number of Korean men who are interested in pedophilia. |

You can go to Las Vegas and find prostitutes legally. Illegally, just go to any street corner/alley in a city in the US. You'll find prostitutes. However, you can't guarantee that American prostitutes are always female. |
No you can't, prostitution is illegal in Las Vegas! |

The sex industry is a problem here. We are in Southeast Asia. If it isn't Korean prostitutes, then its the sex slaves that get smuggled in here from Russia.
The Japanese have problems with prostitution too. I've read many stories of middle aged men taking high school (even middle school) girls out on dates and giving them money in exchange for sexual favors.
Don't even get me started with China and their Human Rights violations. I'm sure child prostitution is a tremendous problem in China. Their government just has better control on the flow of information.
Just about every country in this area has sexual slavery and human trafficking. To say that its just a "Korean problem" is incorrect. When you look at the BIG picture, then it isn't unusual what happened.
Prostitution is legal in Las Vegas, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist outside of Nevada. There is prostitution all over the US. Go into any city in the US, and I guarantee you can find hookers. Of course, the main difference is that going to a prostitute is a stigma and socially taboo in the West, whereas in the East it is acceptable.
I want to make the point that this isn't strictly a "Korean problem". Some people on this board would love nothing more than to say this is an isolated incident that is specific to Korea alone. |
Where did I or anyone say as you did... that its "just a Korean problem?"
You shouldn't get so defensive to where you start imagining that things were said, when they weren't!

Not a smart thing to agree with! Otherwise, thank you very much for your contribution to the thread, seriously! |

Some people get off on being abusive and abusing other people. You know that. It is very, very, very bad. These people should be all prosecuted. All of them. |
