My most hated words are: "moist," "poignant," "nurture," and "celeb."
If I ever saw all four of them in a single sentence, I would pull a full Lear and poke my eyes out.
If I ever heard all four of them in a single sentence, my head would explode like a microwaved haggis in a '70's Cronenberg movie.
You see, in the early nineties, I had a Hippie girlfriend for a while. Yeah, yeah, whatever, it wasn't my fault. I was baked. Shut up. Anyway, she and all her Hippie friends had Secret Hippie Names that had been given to them by some lecherous old paedophile junkie who claimed to be a Holy Man. My girl's Secret Hippie Name was 'Nurture.'
Not sure why I hate those other words so much...allergies, maybe? Dunno.
What are your most loathed words, good people?

Good Christ on a Bike, that was close! Lucky for me I'm too drunk to find my face with both hands.

appropriate: This word seems to be a favorite among supercilious people, and supercilious people are my least favorite people.

whatever: This was a fad word in the Nineties, serving as a catch-all when the speaker was unable to find the right word.

awesome: This was a fad word in the Eighties. The most popular modifier for this word was totally.

in-depth: I seem to have inherited my mother's aversion to this word. She never could understand why people say "in-depth" to mean "deep" but not "in-width" to mean "wide" or "in-height" to mean "high."

"What Words Do You Hate the Most?"

I suppose, "You're fired" is pretty near the top of my list.

My name, the way Koreans kids pronounce it, is my current number one.

Koreans' misuse of the word "funny". "Soccer was funny yesterday" "I like computer games because they're funny".

This and Koreans adding extra syllables to English words.

Yea, I think it's the words that I head my students misuse the most.

Like diligent, convenient, and famous.

preventative - cracks me up when I hear the bigwigs on AFN use it. The correct word is preventive.

Uh... they are both good words:

Quote:
preventive or preventative
The words are often used interchangeably to denote whatever prevents something else happening or occurring, especially when it is undesirable. However, preventative is often applied to an actual object, especially in noun form, while preventive is mostly reserved for an abstract concept, and remains an adjective: Preventive medicine regards vitamin C as an effective preventative against colds.

"actually"

Like, "Actually, I thought I was gonna die." or "It's not too bad, actually."

You thought you were going to die or you didn't. It's not too bad, or it's bad. Or it's good.

Another one is 'war on terror' Isn't it supposed to be 'war on terroism'?

'At this point in time.' How about 'now'?

OK, they are phrases, but, whatever. Very Happy

I don't understand this either. How can you fight terror? My least favorite word/phrase is 'pass remarkable' which apparently means you pass alot of remarks/talk too much. I'm not sure if it is real but my sis uses it all the time, about me usually.

Also 'common sense' because it is misused constantly.
