I am applying for a US immigrant visa, and I need to have a criminal background check done by the RCMP.
It requires having a set of fingerprints taken...etc. I am worried about my local police dept(in korea) being able to do this...or understand what I need/want. Anyone done this, and have advice? Does it cost money? If so how much?
Also, on the info sheet I was given, it said it could take from 2-12 months to get the check mailed back to me....what have your experiences been? I can't wait a year!! |

Canadian Criminal Record Check
To get a Canadian criminal record check from Korea, one should contact the RCMP Canada office in Ottawa for information and forms. One of the requirements is to have your fingerprints done in Korea, which can be done at a local police station. Once you get your fingerprints done, you will have to send it with your personal information to the RCMP office in Ottawa by mail or by courier. More information is available http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/crimrec/finger2_e.htm#Obtain.
Korean Criminal Record Check
Local Requests in Korea:
Koreans and Non-Koreans should visit their nearest police station and request a Criminal History Information Record (CHIR) [Bumjoi Gyung-ryuck Jaryo Hoibo-seo; 범죄 경력 자료 회보서]. One has to bring an ID such as a passport or an alien registration card in person. Near the embassy, the Namdaemoon police station (Scientific Investigation Team tel: 02-777-0795) provides the service within a day, but the processing time could be different depending on the police station you contact.
There is no fee for the service. |

The Korean police can do this for you easily. I had mine done in less than 15 minutes, and they did it for free. The RCMP took about 4 months to mail the results back to me; that timeframe is pretty typical. |
