You can do the package deal but I think you can do it cheaper as you said your parents were paying a lot of cash fly there. You can get a nice enough hotel, a/c fridge and cable TV for 35,000 -40,000, and food can be really cheap depending if you want to eat lobster or get some food from the store or a burger. You can buy booze cheap and find lots of happy hour at bars.

You'll be there in low season so negotiate the price, when you arrive let your parents relax and have a drink and you and your girlfriend check out the hotels, it doesn't have to be an expensive side trip.

The package is not just the hotel, but the flight from Cebu to Caticlan, trike to the beach, boat to Boracay, hotel and breakfast for 3 nights, then the return.

It's his parents... go up scale and enjoy the time.... after spending all that cash to get there...

is a difference of less than $200 (as a percentage of the whole price) gonna break the bank?

It is certainly the difference between 3* and 5*. It will CERTAINLY make it a more memorable time for everyone concerned (especially his parents).

Again, just my humble opinion.

To put it in perspective.

Last year my wife and I did a package from Cebu to Boracay at Nigi-nigi. 3 nights - 4 days including airfare, transfers and breakfast. We paid P16,000 all up.

The flight cebu - Caticlan is p8000 per person = p32,000
Room is p1700 per night per room * 2 rooms * 3 nights = p10,000
trike and boat 2 ways * 4 pax = p500
a-la-carte breakfast * 4 pax * 3 days = p1500

Looks like about p44,000 ($950 - $235/person) all up outside of a package.

Note that the airfare (pricing checked for last week of July 2007 so it is current) is about 72% of the total price of the whole deal.

In realistic terms, for tourism purposes, taking the boat from Cebu to Iloilo and v-hire from there to Kalibo and changing to another v-hire to get to Caticlan is not a viable option. This trip alone would take about 3 days.

If you want to have a comfortable time you should budget about $50 per person per day for your time there as as tourist. It will cover hotels, transportation, meals and some misc. shopping.

It can be done cheaper but keep the old adage in mind.

Low price, speed (available time), comfort. You can have any 2 of the three.

I agree with you, he said earlier that it is costing his parents a small fortune so spending extra money might be a concern. All I said is that it can be done cheaply at reasonably nice place.

And the point I was trying to make is that there are 2 prices.
The tourist price and the Pinoy price. For the record, I hate paying the Kano rates.

Just buying the airticket and getting a hotel when you get there (as a tourist) WILL be more expensive than getting the same pricing that a Pinoy would get for a Pinoy package (on the same airplane and in the same hotel) from a decent travel agent located in the Phils.

The package the wife and I got was less than the price of the airplane ticket and we got it all.

How much different are Pinoy prices than tourist prices? Can you give me percentage or some examples?

Ttompatz,

Under your prior recommendation, the GF and I are going to hit Alona beach, we only 1 week plus the w/ends on either end, I also hate paying tourist prices. So my question to you is do you think Flora would be able to sort us out a good price on a hotel on Alona on the morning that we catch the hispeed ferry over to Bohol?

I understand that it is a random, maybe rather difficult to answer, question, but if you don't ask you don't get!!

Cheers

the, can't wait to be sat on beach drinking San, bomb

The comment I made was in reference to an air/hotel package to Boracay compared to paying for air and hotel separately and it is different than grabbing a room off the beach on Panglao.

She won't get a commision for the booking so she will have to charge you for the long distance calls. There really is no need to bother.

There will be lots of places on (or just behind) the beach to choose from and you get local prices if you just walk in off the beach or are making a local call to get the room.

Alona Tropical starts at p1200 for a basic room (room 2,3,4 on the beach are nice). You get the sea breeze so you don't need to pay for aircon. It also includes a-la-carte breakfast for 2, has a nice pool and dive shop.
Alona Kew starts at p1500 for a basic room.
Lost Horizon starts at p2000.
Alona PALM starts at p8000 (that is NOT a typo).

Just catch a cab down to the beach from the ferry, start a the apartments behind the Alona Tropical (if you want an apartment just off the beach) or start at A.T and work down the beach till you find the price you want.

There are a couple places behind the Oops bar that are reasonable as well. Genesis divers (and the associated resort) comes to mind.

On the road up from the beach beside the Alona Kew there are 2 more resorts that are OK and reasonably priced as well.

IF you are really worried, call the tropical and reserve 2 fan rooms on the beach for your first night and then, if you don't like them, you can shop around on the beach.

July/August are the shoulder/low season for them so you really will have no trouble getting a decent room at a good price.

Again, ttompatz has come up trumps with excellent in-depth knowledge and advice on the Philippines. There are many people on this board with travel and/or living experience of different cities/countries, but ttompatz consistently replies to all inquires related to PH with detailed info and usually very helpful links, and genuinely seems to want people to fully enjoy and utilise their time in PH.

Well dear sir, in my book you are a fine gentleman, and I tip my hat to you. I sincerely hope that you and fine wife have a beautiful weekend.

Thank you.

For future reference I can also give similar detailed advice for Hong Kong, Macau, and Beijing if anyone wants my 50 won worth of free advice.
