I want my prints back! Now! I say it is WRONG to fingerprint foreigners indiscriminately, and guess what, the government agrees!

No More Black Fingers (2003.05.22)

by Bang Hyun-cheol ([email protected])

Most foreigners no longer need to have their fingerprints on record at the Immigration Office, the Justice Ministry said Thursday.
The fingerprint "seal" system for foreigners has been abrogated, the ministry said, although the formal procedures for changing the related law remain to be carried out. The system collected fingerprints of all foreigners over 20 years old who have stayed in the country for more than a year as well as foreigners whose fingerprints are needed for investigations, national security reasons or the interests of the Justice Ministry.

Now only foreigners who are security risks or are under investigation will be required to provide fingerprints. The revised bill will be presented at the regular National Assembly sessions in the fall.

Will you be protesting the U.S. decision to fingerprint all foreigners entering the U.S. with the exception of Canadians now?

Fingerprints are a pretty failsafe way of identifying someone for doing something wrong.

Seems to me that people who are worried about it might be the ones who have reason to worry?

I don't intend to break the law, so it doesn't bother me either way.

I don't care if they have my prints. Any crimes where foreigners are suspect I don't have to worry as my prints will prove that i am innocent.

invasion of privacy - whatever, it is not that big a deal. Other things yes, this no.

That's a pretty bigoted thing to say! Foreign criminals need our support! We've got to stick together! Laughing

Why exactly should we support a criminal just because they are a foreigner?

Chances of getting fingerprints back from a law enforcement agency anywhere in the world are probably around zero. Korea is no exception. Even if they are returned, they have probably already been entered in a permanent data base or a shared pool.

Bottom line: It's too late.

I didn't mind too mcuh although the black ink peed me off a bit. So hard to wash off the hands.

Its true, whats the fuss about all this human rights stuff. Its just fingerprints. You only have to be concerned if you do something wrong. Do you have the intention of doing something wrong???
I think people(especially Americans and I'm not american bashing, you have lawsuits for all ridiculous things) are goijng a little too far. You aren't losing any right are you???

Because the Korean cops would never tamper or manipulate evidence to create a case against a hindoongee.

I don't care that they have my prints either, knowing how well Korean immigration works they've probably already lost them.
