Just a curious question, how many here have a good number of Korean friends you hang out with on a regular basis?

Is your "group" made up mainly of other foreigners? Do Koreans make up 50% of your closest friends? Less? More?

I have been here 1 year and I have 3 Koreans that I consider good friends.

In my experience it's easy to find Koreans who want to hang out with me, but they view me more like a fashion excessory to show off to their friends, or they're looking for free english lessons. Usually after they've shown me off, and I loose my "usefulness" they stop coming around. Or once they pass their TEPS/TOEFL etc.

I got hurt really badly a few times, and after that I've started keeping my distance a bit. I don't have anything against Koreans, I just got tired of trying to sift through the ass-hats.

Most of my friends are waegooks.

Most of my friends are Korean. Probably a good 80%. This is for two reasons:

1. I live in a rural area and don't run into many fellow foreigners.
2. I'm interested in doing more than just drinking beer and getting laid.

Im interested in doing LESS than drinking beer and getting laid. Beer is over rated ...

For a while, I was only hanging out with Koreans. It was fine at the time, but the fact that our conversations became increasingly shallow and always focused on the same topics began to frustrate me. I was annoyed by how my Korean friends refused to take charge of their lives, even though they complained all the time. I think it's impossible to achieve depth with Korean friends. There's a definite language/cultural barrier.

So I switched to the foreigner scene in the neighborhood. Things are much better now...

All my guy friends are foreigners and all my female friends are Koreans. I drink and party with the guys and go to movies and drink coffee and stuff with the girls. I'm very satisfied with the mix.

You and probably 80% of the foregin male english teachers in Korea (with the occasional western woman or kyopo thrown in).

Having said that, I could probably count on one hand the number of Korean men whom I had a desire to establish close relations with after the initial first encounter during my 3.5 years in the ROK...

Korean friends are great until you try to double book and do something with more than one of them. Then it's like putting unfamiliar cats together.

Me too. In five years I just could not connect deeply with any Korean males except one very special guy. But of course, he was highly unusual for a Korean guy. Spoke perfect English, travelled a lot, was a great musician, and worked as a sales rep for a big musical instrument store. So he was very worldly and sophisticated. And STILL he would complain to me about low class western guys "taking" and "ruining" good Korean women. Always stopping to point out that I was "different" of course, because I had a steady gf.

The women are generally more open minded and progressive.

I have been here 3 years, and I have no good Korean friends. I have a few that I am acquaintances with and a few I would call friends, but none that I would ever call to see what they are doing. I have got a lot of foreign friends but most of those are people I have met through personal interests so we have stuff in common.

If you want good friends you have to befriend people about 5 years older than you to hit the right mindset and be on the same level.
