|
|
I was talking to a teacher who worked for a Ding Ding Dang in Seusang-gu, Daegu and she told me that she quit her job because she believed her phone was tapped. How? She told me that one evening she was on the phone with a friend and they were making plans for the weekend.
After the call she had dinner, showered, and went to bed. The following morning she was at school and one of the Koreans in the office made a comment like, "I hear you will be (plans made on phone) this weekend."
My friend said a shiver went through her body and she felt like she had been violated.
Since her friend was not her co-worker, and she had told no one about her plans between bed and going to work, she knew that the only way for the school to know this was by tapping her phone; she told her co-workers, went to her boss and gave her notice.

Everyone knows the calls are coming from inside the house. |

Whew, sounds like she quit just in the nick of time, she really dodged a bullet!
edit: Yes, this is sarcasm.

I have a good story about that.
One of my friends didn't have his phone tapped but the had hidden mics in the house(that could be it, the phone would be too hard but mikes could be easy to pull off). Anyway, he and his g/f had a big fight but told nobody and went to work the next day. When she got there all the Korean teachers were asking her if she was alright,etc..?? She thought it was strange. Then they would comment at home what things they would change about the hagwon and bingo the next day things were changed for better or worse.
Anyway, they found 4 in the house. Tiny little ones, in flower pots, etc. They took them to the labour board and got a huge payout and the hagwon owner did some jail time(not much, only asbout 1 month). Anyway, he has opened up another hagwon, a Topia franchise in Changwon. be careful anyone working at Topia there and you are reading this. |

All of this presumes that the hogwon directors are sitting there 24/7 listening to sounds in the house. This may fit with the conventional wisdom that they're sleazy and scary, but it doesn't fit with the other piece of conventional wisdom that they're lazy and can't understand English. |

Lemon, thanks for putting this story into perspective.
I could just imagine the hogwan owners and Korean teachers sitting around a speaker listening in on a conversation between two native english speakers.
Bwah ha ha ha ha.
This is the best story of the day.
Bwah ha ha ha ha. |

Right.
They have nothing better to do than to sit around waiting for you to make calls they can eavesdrop on live in real time, or depending on how the bugs are set up, they have nothing better to do then sit around reviewing tape recordings of all your phone calls.
Then they tell Korean employees that you're being taped and bring up your social life in daily Korean only chat sessions. Then to top it off they forget to caution other Koreans not to bring up these subjects with you.
Wonjangs often aren't the most ethical nor the smartest creatures on the planet, but this smacks of a 'the world revolves around me/the world is out to get me' paranoid delusion.
I'd like to hear more details of Just Because's story- call me an assh*le but it sounds like an urban myth from where I sit. |

Lemon, 9/10 your conservative remarks/research pay-off. However, sometimes - well - there's a word for the 1/10th and down the drain goes what people have seen and heard as dismissed as extremism.

Does the logic to dismiss this require 24/7 watching/listening? That's a presumption on your part. I don't know that people are talking about 24/7 when they mention bugs/cameras. Perhaps just key days/hours when a key situation arises at the school that warrants concern. That would put all the listening and watching about an hour after the last class when teachers blow off steam in their apartment.

Me, conservative?! I have a friend who teaches somewhere in the US who may disagree. I should introduce you to him, but be warned - he's rather excitable. You know, spits when he talks, arms waving, the whole bit.

No one's arguing this is impossible. But it just seems really unlikely.
Some people are paranoid. Like the ones who freak out when their computer crashes and they come running to me for help about their hacker who they believe is out to get them, and only them.
Little do they know, it's really EnfCorp. |

Heh. 'Lemonhead'.
I join you in mocking Dubsie, Lemon! Let us join hands and march forward into a brave, Dubyaless future!

(also, I find myself wondering if 'big bill' is that lumpy, lisping guy that most everyone disliked intensely, that I almost had a fistfight with many years back, in a bar in Pusan) |
