13 years........I guess he will spend more time when he reaches the U.S
SKorea-born American jailed for having sex with young girl in Cambodia
The Associated PressPublished: June 5, 2007
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia: An American national of South Korean origin was sentenced to 13 years in prison in Cambodia for having sex with a 14-year-old girl, a judge said Tuesday.
Chan Madina, a judge at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, told The Associated Press she sentenced 46-year-old Myron Maboris on Monday. She convicted him of debauchery during a trial last Thursday.
Debauchery is a broadly defined Cambodian legal term for sexual offenses against minors that is punishable by 10 to 20 years in jail.
She said she also ordered the man to pay 3 million riel (US$740; 550) in compensation to the girl.
A U.S. Embassy spokesman declined to comment on the case, citing privacy laws.
Police arrested Maboris during a raid on his Phnom Penh guest house room in October last year while he was with the ethnic Vietnamese girl, who was naked.
Police also arrested the girl's 49-year-old mother and three men a motorbike taxi-driver who transported her and two alleged sex brokers.
The girl's mother was also sentenced to 13 years in jail for involvement in the crime, Chan Madina said, adding the motorbike taxi-driver and two other men each received eight-year jail terms on conspiracy charges.
Lax law enforcement and poverty have made Cambodia a prime destination for foreigners seeking sex with minors. But police have recently stepped up efforts to fight the crime. |

Well, if he won the gold medal in child sex, he'll be the Korean national hero. |

I understand what you mean. They could have just said 'An American', because that is what he is. But (just like Virgina Tech) they posted
a 'KOrean born American'. Maybe koreans are beginning to get a bad reputation in the A.P.........
or maybe some of the editors worked at a hogwan for a while~!

On a side note, I was channel surfing last night and stopped on the horror that is Arirang for a few minutes. There was a documentary about the Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles, focusing on the fact she is 'Korean American'. However, upon watching more carefully, I discovered she was born in Brazil and moved to the States when she was a girl. They featured her and her parents speaking Korean, but it seemed a bit laboured. Nice shot of her eating Korean food and not forgetting to mention it was her favourite. The killer line was something along the lines of "She is giving Korea a high profile in the world", even though she had never lived there.
It got me thinking. I am of German descent and speak the language haltingly. Why don't DW TV follow me around, show me eating Knackwurst, exclaim that sauerkraut is f@#kin miraculous and hold me up as an example of Aryan supremacy. Same concept, no? |

That's because Germans aren't insecure like Koreans are when it comes to their perceived international image. |

There are some Korean American landlords in Manhattan, Kansas that aren't exactly giving a good impression. Maybe they can follow them around. |

No, but even if I was some equivalently middling bureaucrat somewhere, you could bet your last shiny sip won coin that Deutsche Welle would not be making the same fuss. |
