At the public high school where I work, they are very tight about their copies. I have over 300 students, which means I need to make that many copies (x 2 or 3 depending on the lesson) every week. I told my CTs that I wouldn't have to use so much paper / ink if they could have the students buy a book for my class. No dice, since they don't get a grade (tech school). Never mind the fact that they don't have to purchase a notebook either, which means I have to supply them with A4 every class. I also made the comment that if I had a scanner, I could scan all of my documents and just show them on the TV display. I was met with blank stares.
AND...when I do make copies, they insist that I don't include any pictures (which is fair enough, I have the students draw their own pictures), and if there's a trace of black ink on the paper, I have to cut it off with scissors.
Finally, they use low-grade paper, which won't show all the letters half the time, and feels like tissue paper.
Is this common for public schools, or am I at a particularly poor one? Also, any ideas on how I can be more resourceful or convincing would be helpful! |

I never got any 'anal' at mine...but that's just me I suppose.
(You should consider using more appropriate language in the thread title man.) |

My middle school has a copy request system. I make one copy, fill out a form, and submit it. Yes, they use low grade (grayish color) paper, but the printing comes out fine. |

I had a similar problem at my last high school job in Korea. First of all, the copier which I had to use looked to be about 30 years old and would ALWAYS jam. I had to do double-sided which made it worse because this would only cause further jams. I had to use the low-grade newsprint and half the time I or the students could not make out a lot of it. What made it all so funny was that there was a brand new high tech copier sitting in a box in the library. My co-teacher had asked if we could use it and was shot down by the principal. I got so tired of making copies that I asked if the students could by the book. No way. So I stopped doing handouts and used mostly powerpoint activites (heavy on games), showed movies and listened to music.
Good luck |

I'm so lucky that I sit right beside a photocopier I can use as much as I want. Some weeks I must make over 1,000 copies. |

I work at a public high school and yes, we have the same copies on the low grade paper as they can't to buy every studetn a copy of the text I use to supplement the h/s text book.
You just have to get used to it and take solace in the fact that at least they can't expect more from you if they're not abel to help out more... |

My school is so anal that when the wind blows, it always comes from the center. |

Maybe the school doesn't make them purchase a notebook, but I certainly do. I give them 2 classes to get their shit together. After that, if they have no text or notebook, I simply boot them out of class (and I mark them absent). How can someone possibly study a language without a book to take notes in or to study from? |

Make copies? Why would you do that? I'll be f&&&&d before I do that kind of work. No books? Get GD books. Like I'm going to stand there and make photocopies all day. And then have them complain about it?
I agree with the previous poster about them having notebooks. Only makes sense. I find though that they always forget them, use them to draw, do other work in them, etc.
Yes, I paid for them. Someone's just going to say, "We don't need that." Which is really stupid. Didn't cost much though. Only 500 Won each. I drink more than that in free coffee every day and the notebooks last quite a while since they're only using them for neat work.
I keep their personal notebooks in my classroom that I hand out when we're doing writing and get them back from them at the end of class. It's the only way to make sure they have their books where you can monitor their writing, etc.
They're too disorganized. |
