|

I am finishing my contract in December of this year. I do not want to work for a hagwon anymore. I am done with that idea. I was maybe going to see about working one more month at the hagwon I'm at if public schools in the Seoul area, near say Bundang, don't hire until March. However, I would rather not work the extra month since I work too many hours for my qualifications and for what I am getting paid. So, since I'm posting this here, I would appreciate some feedback since December is coming closer and closer. |

Do a winter camp in January and holiday some place warm in February.
You have an almost perfect schedule.
You won't regret taking a break between jobs. |

they do. in fact some occasionally higher in the middle of the term.
i would suggest gepik (gyeonggi-do english program in korea).
http://gepik.ken.go.kr/
i actually went through the process for the spring term just past but decided against it due to unexpected reasons.
there is a really nice liaison person there who deals well with foreign-english teachers.
not so sure about the smaller provincial boards of education in the rest of korea,
while etis (which is the program for seoul)
http://etis.sen.go.kr/content/3-wheretosend.html
tends to be a little less flexible with there scheduling. well at least that is the impression i got.
my suggestion is go through their contact info and contact directly someone who is in charge of application. there usually is one who will speak english relatively well...
overall, it is much better this way, i think, than going through a recruiter.
p.s. start now and touch base with someone at a provincial office. tell them your intent and send them your credentials/info.
this way they may even call you when something unexpected opens in there province. |

I started my elementary school job in February of last year. But I'm not part of any of the alphabet soup programs i.e. GEPIK, EPIK, etc. |

I started mine on July 1 last year, 3 weeks before summervacation started. Its possible, but its kind of a tough time. I would look for non EPIK/GEPIK/Etc like another poster suggested. Start looking in advance and if you can't find anything, do a camp and a vacation. Vacationing in somewhre cheap like Thailand or Vietnam should cost you about the same as living in Korea. |

I was in your exact situation last year.
I was finished at the end of December. Applied through footprints, and said I was going home for January and February, so SMOE interviewed me in person before I left for Canada (actually, before the "official" interview process began). Had my interview, went home, found out I was hired, and flew back to Seoul to start training in the first week of March.
Whether you want that month or two to go home, or to travel, you won't regret having the break in between. For me, the two month break was almost perfect! |

I am contemplating, actually, maybe not waiting for December and foregoing the severance, because my hagwon pays me 2.6 million, but I am at work for 7.5 hours a day M-F which 52.5 hours and to get that 2.6 in full add another 6 hours on Saturday. So I am at work for 58.5 hours a week. It doesn't seem worth it, and the money I spend calling my friends, because I can't see them much could be used on some meals together.... I am seriously thinking of giving my notice and jumping ship... |

Go for as long as you can, bank your coin, jump ship when you are ready, spend a month or 4 chillin on the beach in your favorite SE Asia country and come back with your batteries refreshed for a new start at the end of Feb.
You can get a small apartment for about $300 prepaid for 3 months (utilities included) in most SE Asia countries (Phils, Thailand, Vietnam, etc).
Spend your 90 days on your tourist visa (not waiver stamp) and get an extension or move to the next one. Works wonders for the soul and you can live comfortably on just a few hundred $ a month.
One extra month at work here will pay for a 6 month holiday down south.

I don't have that kind of coin, the Royal Banque and student loans get a big amount of my check... I could save maybe 300 bucks a month...
I am starting to cut back on my expenses.... I don't need to leave for a holiday... I would take the opportunity later working at a public school.. A holiday for me at this point would be less hours at work and time with my friends.. I am feeling burned out.... I am sure I don't need much coin to jump ship... I just need another job... |

7.5*5=37.5
37.5+6=43.5
Where does the extra 15 hours a week come in? |
