Too bad he has to give 30 days. Sucks to be him.

He's lying out his ass. Complete BS. |

| Fight it. There are a lot of people who can help you with advice on here. You need to get what is owed, and at the same time, teach him a lesson. Good luck with it, and please post how you went with it. |

Man, the stuff I hear about hakwans never ceases to amaze(and disgust) me. I've never worked at a hakwan but it seems you guys and gals are truly in the front-line trenches of EFL in Korea.
It's easy for me to say, as I've never worked at a hakwan, but: go to the wall and nail that a$$hole for all you can get. |

30 days is the law.
2 weeks+1 week isn't 30 days. He has to pay.
slap him with a wrongful dismissal charge and you might be able to get a week extra pay. |

O.P.
Everyone is pretty much right. Your slimy boss can't do this to you. Fight it. Do what you have to do. AND..........make sure you record any conversations you have with him.
Best of luck. Although, considering the circumstances, you will probably come out on top. It may take some time, but I think you will get was is due to you.

I would've told him that that's fine, but he owes me for the remainder of my last month and severence. Any objections would be met with complete anger.
Can't believe you didn't ask about the rest of the month and severence. Who cares if he fires you? As long as you get what's due. Obviously this is just an excuse in his mind to not pay you though.
Ask him what he plans to do with the rest of your month and severence. First thing you should do. Make sure you get that. Also contact the labor board and tell them that your boss isn't going to pay you. Also contact pension, the tax office, and the health office.
Get your money. |

| Ask him about your severence and the rest of the month. If he tells you he's not paying them, just up and say, "You're just firing me one month early to avoid paying them. You're cheating me. Why are you cheating me? Is that the Korean way? Are you just a fking asshole or something? Why don't you go fk yourself! I'm going to the labor board, pension office, health office AND tax office! The labor board will extend my visa and I'm going to get these offices to go after you. You're trying to cheat me. It's obvious. GO FK YOURSELF, you smelly fk!" |

I'm not sure about ying's thinking.
If you need some inspiration read the St. Andrew's thread by ianinislan. some great stuff there. |

What else would your reaction be?
"We're firing you a week before your job ends. Maybe we won't pay you for the first three weeks of this month, but we're definitely not paying you for the rest of the month. Of course severence is out of the question. Yes."
I'd flip. |

It's time to man up and show the small man that you're not afraid to go to war. Your co-workers aren't standing up, so you had better.
It's not like you have anything to lose. (except your severance and airfare ~$3,000 US) |

We're firing you an hour before your contract ends. Even though you taught all your classes on your last working day, we're not paying you severence.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!
I told my wife a month ago that I was firing someone. That counts as notice.
Double fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!
The first 360 days of your contract were just a probationary trial period in our eyes. We have now come to the decision that you are just not enthusiastic enough of a teacher. We feel if we continued to employ you for the remaining 3 working days of your contract, our business would suffer tremendously and we would lose all our students.
Triple fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!
I'd hotwire his car, roll it off a cliff and then go to the labor board, pension, tax, and health offices. |

Man, when I hear about stories like this my blood boils. Hogwan owners are the scum of the earth. Koreans claim to be so patriotic, yet their actions leave tens of thousands of people with very bitter attitudes towards Korea that often last a lifetime.
Scumbags. |
Why do they have a shortage of foreign teachers in Korea again?
People in Korea have to understand that foreigners are not here to teach them English just because they need to learn it. We also need fair treatment otherwise we leave. You are very right that many people leave Korea and bad mouth it or when asked about it just say "Korea was okay" without elaborating. I am actually enjoying myself in general in Korea, but I would be extremely cautious about recommending it, and I would be in Japan if I was without student loans without a doubt. |

| OP, I hope you can forward this situation to Chris Gelken at the Korea Herald. He is a reporter on our side and he has proven himself to be sympathetic to our causes. |

Maybe the labor board would be extra helpful in this type of situation. Get Dante57 the money quickly. They could bring up the tax, pension, health thing and warn him of probable future problems.
I'd really like to hear what fkwit has to say to Dante57 about the monies owed.
Update tomorrow? |
