Apparently last week was the week of the 8th annual gay culture festival, and the women students at Yonsei came up with some kind of lesbian fair to promote it. Pretty interesting article. I'm not sure gay activists in my home country would expect such reasonable coverage, without anything lurid or anti-gay.

http://koreabeat.wordpress.com/2007/06/10/lesbian-pies-in-korea/

Quote:
The festival is the first Yonsei campus Lesbian Culture Festival, run by the female student body as a whole with the aim of eliminating prejudice against sexual minorities.

According to those running the festival, the name given to the event is L (Lesbian) in Queerland, a take-off of the name Alice in Wonderland, in order to state that just as with Alice from the book, lesbians are not different from others, but should be recognized the way they are.

The most popular part of the festival is the Question Stairs which reveal what lesbians think about themselves. By walking up the stairs and moving in directions based on whether they answered yes or no to the questions inscribed on them, the thoughts of lesbians regarding themselves can be seen.

On May 30th, the first day of the festival, 10 students wearing I am a lesbian shirts formed a same-sex Free Hug flash mob as at least 100 spectators gathered.

Also, a self-made film inspecting the realities of life as an openly gay middle or high school student, called Out, has attracted deep attention.

I would so like to see that film. Anyway, I don't think Koreans can be said to disbelieve in Korean gayness anymore.

They way Koreans do things "over the top" here, it would be interesting to see Korean gay guys express themselves if they were allowed.

If the whole world acknowledged gay people, we could have a Mr. Gay World contest. That would take over as the most entertaining beauty pagent on TV. No joke. I mean that.

No, no pics. We (myself and my gf) were in COEX and heading towards the elevator and there was a couple holding each other and kissing, then when they got off it turned out they were both girls. One of them had kind of shortish frizzy hair which is why I thought she was a guy from behind.

*see Sunkist commercials

On a side note, if anyone is ever interested in seeing Korea's gay culture unleashed, one only needs to take a walk up "Homo Hill" in Itaewon on a Saturday night.

I have a feeling it's not as much "over the top" as it is they really can't express themselves anywhere else and let it all out there.

Sometimes it's a bit much, though.

I hate butch lesbians, it runs the hotness of a lesbian make out session...only hot, femme lipstick lesbians should be allowed to exist

I saw a t-shirt the other day that said, "I only agree with gay marriage if both chicks are hot." Laughing

No, they were both thin and cute. One of them had shorter hair and I wasn't paying much attention at first, that's all.

I was just making a general observation, a musing, if you will, on the subject of butch lesbians. Any guy will tell you, butch lesbians are a travesty to the hotness that is lesbian-on-lesbian action. Butch lesbos ruin it for all us guys.

Was there any reaction from the people around? I mean even hetero making out should attract attention.

No, it was the escalator going up to the 1st floor where there aren't many people. My girlfriend remarked that 요즘 여자끼리 사귀는게 유행이래 (recently it's been popular for girls to date each other).

Although I knew of scads of gay guys last year (my gf's male coworker dated basically every gay boy in the greater-Seoul area), I only started noticing lesbians since I got back to Korea (in January). I can't think of one lesbian sighting last year, but I'm seeing them all over Sinchon lately. I can't think of a racial group whos homosexuality I could possibly support more than Asian girls.
