Hi folks,

Just wondering if anyone has lived in, or knows anything about, Kwangju. I may have spelled that wrong.

Anyway, all I know is that it's in the southwest. Any additional info would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Zoom

Here's a link in English.

And another. And another.

I don't personally know the place. I have read that it's not particularly pleasant, but then none of the large cities in Korea are, especially, so don't let that put you off.

I lived there my first year, and not far away for two years after that so I'd commute in for partying and looking around on the weekends. PM me if you want.

A lot of the schools in the chain have cameras in the classroom.

The evil North Korean patsy - former president and thief - Kim Dae-jun is from there, and in 1980 the South Korean army killed hundreds and injured over a thousand poor protestors. Of course, the media and most locals blamed the US and Reagan for it. I loathe Reagan - but he had NOTHING to do with that mess. Kinda like Rhee Seong-meon having his gangster buddies massacre all those folks on Cheju-do - it was more than the supposed massacre at Nogunri, yet the Koreans don't point fingers at themselves. It's not good for the pure blood."

Erm... actually, Carter was the US president in 1980, and he probably did have something to do with it. The question is how much.

Thanks for the Reagan correction - but this is still crybabyism and Korean "mein kampf" rhetoric. The fact is this: the Korean government slaughtered Koreans and on a scale unparalleled to the number of South Koreans slaughtered by Americans since the Panmunjun armistice.

Why is it that England is not responsible, or Germany, or other nations with ties to South Korea? Sure, the US military presence plays a heavy part into this; but Koreans still dont deal with how they have caused the majority of their own misery post Japanese colonial rule. From Kim Il-seong to Rhee Seong-meon to Cheon Doo-hwan to Kim Dae-han: how is it that the national conscience is so quick to overlook the mass tragedies their own society inflicte upon itself - all WORSE that those that foreigners supposedly inflicted upon them?

Carters hands are not bloody. Its more of the Teflon lies that will one day haunt South Korea. When it becomes a serious world player (it so desperately wants to be Japan Jr.) it will have its own questions to answer. This is of-topic, but I need to address it.

Still, thanks for the correction.

Cheers,

Joe

Kim Dae Jung is not from Kwangju. He just garners most of his support there. He is from a small island on the South Western coast.(Joella province.) The name of the island escapes me. I have found that the people of Kwangju blame Chun Doo Hwan for the 18.5 massacre. I have never heard Jimmy Carter's name mentioned in my two years here. Unfortunately I have found Gwangju to be a little unfriendly at times. However, I don't think it is just an anti Western issue. If you speak with Koreans from other provinces they will tell you that Gwangju has a reputation for unfriendliness going back hundreds of years.

Incidently, the most hospitable people I have met in Korea hail from the more remote parts of Joella province. Indeed I have met some older Koreans from those parts who could be considered the friendliest people I have ever met anywhere in the world. An incident with an ajoshi at Haenam bus terminal springs to mind. I had the feeling that they really wanted me to go home with a positive impression of their country. It was certainly a positive experience when compared with Seoul where wealth has eroded the younger generation's sense of respect and caring.

Ive said this to a lot of people: the kindest people Ive ever met were South Korean, and the most evil, vile, despicable people Ive ever met were South Korean.

The yin and yang on the South Korean flag are very appropriate.

Cheers,

Joe
