A bicycle, that is. I was riding along one of those subway exits where you can't see anyone who's coming out and just as I got to the corner this little Korean kid comes running around the corner and I ride right through him. As I see him crying and moaning on the ground, all I can think is, "Why wasn't I riding faster?" No, seriously these old Korean ladies were walking behind me and they came over. I was thinking this could turn out badly for me, that I'm at the mercy of what these old Korean women want to say. But from what I gathered through the way they were talking to him and the way they weren't talking to me, these ladies gently scolded the kid for not watching where he was going. Then I had to go with the kid to his father and the father made the kid apologize.
Yeah I know this story is a letdown from the subject title. If you want to write a nightmarish alternate ending, be my guest. |

Pedestrians usually get the blame when some kind of vehicle hits them. This is a country where jaywalking is seen as a serious offence but riding motorbikes at 30mph on the sidewalk is fine.
It's a car country. |

I once saw a taxi hit a kid walking across the street - pretty loud thump - the kid was lying on the road bawling. Then the driver got out and started yelling at the kid. |

I've had a few close calls myself. That's why I installed a truck horn on my scooter. Scares the bejesus out of people. |

I hit a door opening on a taxi while I was on my scooter once. Luckily I was going at a slow speed. And the passenger getting out apologised and the taxi driver wasn't mad at me. |

Aren't the subway exits on the sidewalk, walk being the operative.
Is it okay to hipcheck a motorscooter in the crosswalk?

Funny, I've been told the exact opposite... by Koreans.
Seems like whenever a pedestrian is involved in an accident with a vehicle the driver is at fault.

Were you being sarcastic when you wrote that "jaywalking is seen as a serious offence" in Korea? I see so many people doing it daily that it doesn't seem like they really give a damn about it. |

The driver yelled at the poor kid? He sounds like a moron. He is a moron. |

I've personally had a policeman sprint down the street blowing his whistle because I didn't use a crosswalk to cross an empty road. He gave me a blasting in Korean and pointed frantically to the crosswalk. My Korean wife goes bananas if I ever try to cross without a crosswalk. She seems to think I'm taking a crazy risk. The fact that I have two eyes and can see if cars are coming or not doesn't seem to matter.
Yes, I see Koreans jaywalking too, but I also see them driving like drunken monkeys and ride motorbikes fast on busy sidewalks. It's just that there is a large portion of people here who will ignore laws if they feel they have to rush.....and when are Koreans not in a rush??!!
My main contention is that, if you try to cross a busy street you will get honked at by every car coming at you. Rightly so. But ride a motorbike on a busy sidewalk and nobody blinks. |

|

Hmmm...that's interesting timing.
After over 5 years in Korea, I got hit for the first time by a car today!
I was on my way to the gym and a grandpa was pulling out to make a right and apparently wasn't watching, so I went flying when he hit my back tire.
Kind of sucked, but no real damage, just scrapes and bruises on the side I landed on.
Haraboji was pretty freaked and came running out apologizing 50 times. Then, I got in trouble from my wife when I got home because I didn't get his phone number etc... but I figured no real damage, so all is good.
So, the moral of the story? No matter how long you avoid it, don't forget, there is some crazy driving going on and be on the lookout! |

Side"walks" for now. But if we English teachers form a union dedicated to running over oblivious Korean children, then lots of things could change. |

scooter riders are scum. Delivery guys are especially bad but it seems waygooks are pretty much as bad as those guys. |
