Hi,
I'm looking into a locale for my stay in South Korea, and I'm hoping to find a more rural area where things might be cheaper. I am not much of a city person, and enjoy the peace of less developed areas. At the same time though, it would be nice to have access to stores and public transportation. Does anyone have any advice on an ideal area to suit my tastes and frugality?
Thanks. |

It would be very difficult to pinpoint a specific place, but your thinking is on the right track. There are very few true suburbs in Korea, and the larger cities are usually ringed by smaller cities. I live in one of them, called Yeongcheon, half an hour by train from Daegu. It has good public transportation and plenty of stores & restaurants. Living here is incredibly inexpensive. I usually get by on about 300,000 per month, and that's with dining out regularly, and hitting the bars about once or twice a week. Figure on 4,000 for a taxi to E-Mart. Walk to everything else including the grocery store, bank, etc. PM me if you want to know more. |

I tend to find food and drink costs about 400,000 won a month, 230,00 won for payroll deductions, and 100,000 won for utilities which leaves about 1,300,000 won a month. |

I'd recommend trying to find something in the NE coast of Korea. Very rural with some of the best beach and the most beautiful mountains in Korea. If I wanted to be in rural Korea, I'd choose something by Seokcho in a heartbeat. |
