true or false: a little bit of cleavage is a big no-no here?
recently relocated from seoul to a new post in busan area. i have a new supervisor who frequently says i should dress more modestly/not show any cleavage. the frequency and the form of the comments are starting to border on harassment in my opinion and i also doubt their legitimacy, due to the facts that: no one in my entire working life has ever accused me of not dressing appropriately (ie, i think it's simply an inaccurate accusation); and the person accusing me of this is a self-acknowledged pious born again x-tian (ie, i think this person is superimposing personal belief system instead of citing actual company policy).
before i respond, if you know, please tell me: is a hint of cleavage truly looked upon as scandalous and inappropriate in this country? i'm having a hard time believing it. maybe it is so and i just don't have a sense of it, having come from more sophisticated seoul plus several years teaching in europe & s america where such a sight is common, and actually encouraged... women in italy walk around in see-through blouses & lace bras practically year round, for heaven's sakes...! what gives here? |

When I am teaching (I teach at a university), I dress modestly.
But when I am out, I am always in skinny-tees in the summer. I couldn't care less what other people think.
I think the key here is that you should look professional when you are around your students.... |

I was really paranoid about it when I first moved here, as I tend to be naturally a little cleavagey. Now that's it's hot I've been wearing a few tops with lower necklines, and nobody has really seemed too concerned about it. My boss is even a pretty hardcore Christian, and she doesn't seem to give a crap either. Some of my younger students are sort of fascinated by my boobs though, no matter what I'm wearing. |

Ok this is simple... You have Seoul and then the rest of Korea.. Seoul is like the bastard child of Korea.. Its wild crazy and you can get everything and do what you want.. The rest of Korea is your old arse grandmother in the bible belt saying you need to wear that turtleneck when its 110 out... |

most of the korean girls i've seen couldn't have cleavage even if they had their arms pushed together
maybe the sight of real live cleavage (which pretty much means actual boobs) is just unfamiliar...;P
honestly I'm not sure..I guess since it's for work you should lean toward conservative, especially if they've commented on it. |

For sure...
I am not buxom by any stretch of the imagination and I wore a shirt that was slightly and I mean SLIGHTLY low cut and my students went ape shit. I ended up wearing my jacket because the idiocy of it all was too much. Never mind the student teachers traipsing around in short skirts and equally low cut shirts |

Since this sentence is excessively under the 1000-word limit, we politely request pictures.
Oh, and to clarify, not your students.

My girlfriend got told not to wear such low cut shirts on her first day of work. Funny thing was that it really wasn't that low cut, and it wasn't supposed to be her first day of work. So, it seems cleavage is not approptiate. |

Definitely don't take your cues from Europe or South America. Take a look at some of the posts from women on this thread:

I don't know about scandalous, but drawing any sort of attention to the girls can lead to very odd moments. |

Imho, it's a no-no. I was just talking with my cousin about this the other day. She's a third-year university student who lives in Seoul. We were watching some videos of Rain and Hyori dancing together on YouTube, and there was one video where Hyori was wearing a pretty revealing outfit - she was dressed like a Moulin Rouge dancer and she was bumping and grinding up against Rain in their dance routine. I asked my cousin if her outfit and dance would be considered scandalous by some Koreans and she said, "yes, most definitely." Then we proceeded to have a conversation about how women in Korea dress and from what she told me, entertainers like Hyori are idolized by young girls, but for the most part, Koreans are still ultra conservative when it comes to their beliefs about how people should dress and behave in public.

Hmm...if he/she is your supervisor, then maybe you should consider what they are saying? Even if they are "superimposing" their "personal belief system," if they are in a senior position, aren't you afraid of pissing them off and possibly losing your job? Just my two cents.

A hint of cleavage in Seoul...I think some people wouldn't care while others would look twice and still, others would greatly disapprove. A hint of cleavage in Busan...not sure. Have you noticed any dirty looks from strangers? Remember, Korea is not Italy.
I hope I won't have an issue with the "unofficial dress code" in Seoul. I don't dress like a hoochie, but I'm accustomed to wearing what I want without worrying about whether people will judge me. I have a feeling that I'll have to make some changes to my wardrobe when I get to Seoul...I just hope that my changes won't need to be too drastic.
