I know it sounds like a Welsh hippy-speedcore band but my students tell me 'flower death' is a real danger.
They say if you sleep in a closed room full of lilies, you will die. Oxygen oozes from plants in the day, and pump CO2 out at night.
I told them the CO2 that exudes from plants at night is a negligible amount and couldn't possibly do you in. They say I'm wrong. They say it's a perfectly good way to top yourself, especially if you leave the fan on.
You folks ever hear of this one?
I wonder if it's a coincidence that lilies are often symbols of death; do they symbolize death in Asia, as they do in the west?
Kind of an interesting image though...a suburban Ophelia sort of thing, I guess...

Hehe. When I date myself, I usually call myself up at least a week in advance to make plans. I usually flip a coin to determine who will pick up the tab - Mr. Visa or Mr. American Express? Smile

Reminds me of some old Tom Waits line, where he says something like "I used to drink alone, but always wound up drinking myself under the table and taking advantage of myself, and not respecting me in the morning."

A room full of C02 would be detrimental to ones health though.

It was on CSI once when a girl killed her next door neighbor with dry ice.

The amount of CO2 produced by plants is microscopic in nature and it is virtually impossible.. even if there was a jungle in your room.

You're thinking of "Better Off Without a Wife." Classic song.

I've always kind of been partial to calling myself up on the phone and asking myself out. You know... (whoops from the audience). Oh yeah, you call yourself up too, huh? Yeah... Well, one thing about it, you're always around! Yeah, I know. Yeah, you ask yourself out, you know. Some class joint somewhere. The Burrito King or something. You know... Well, I ain't cheap, you know. Take yourself out for a couple of drinks maybe, you know. Then you'll be... some provocative conversation on the way home. And park in front of the house, you know, and you... Oh yeah, youre smooth with it... you know, you put a little nice music on. Maybe you put on like... you know... like shopping music, something that's not too interruptive, you know. And then, you know, and eh... slide over real nice, you know, say, 'Oh, I think you have something in your eye'. Eh-heh-heh. Well, maybe it's not that romantic with you, but Christ, I... you know! It ain't... you know... Take myself up to the porch, and take myself inside. Oh, maybe... I make a little something, a brandy snifter or something. Would you like to listen to some of my back records. I got something here... Well, usually about 2.30 in the morning you've ended up taking advantage of yourself and... there ain't no way around that, you know. Yeah, making the scene with a magazine, there ain't no way around... I'll confess, you know, I'm no different, you know. I'm not weird about it or anything. I don't tie myself up first, I just... you know. I just kind of... spend a little time with myself.

If I remember my high school biology correctly, your friend is mistaken with regards of the night/day division, and also re: CO2 emitting.

Oxygen is a byproduct of photosynthesis, so it can only happen when light is available. The so called "Dark Reactions" don't happen solely in the dark: they're light independent so they're happening all the time. Also, they don't produce CO2. These dark reactions fix the carbon into molecules of phosphoglycerate (okay, I had to cheat and look it up-- don't remember THAT much detail from high school.)

Anyway, no, based on what we know about basic plant science, that's a very silly thing to say.

I think that experience has taught that the "danger" from flowers in the hospital rooms is more from a slight risk of infection than anything else ... I know when my mother was in hospital and immunosupressed due to chemotherapy that flowers were one thing that were not allowed into the room at all. I think that the no flowers at night / CO2 danger from flowers is more in the category of old wife's tale than truth.
